1693 means there is a code stored in your ECU. These trucks have several computers in them (for example ECU, PCU, and the transmission if automatic). When one controller registers a fault, the other controllers on the bus store a 1693 code, so 1693 means there is a problem on the network but it's not in this controller. If all you see is 1693, it most likely means you are reading the PCU, which has no faults stored other than the fact that another controller (probably the ecu) has a stored fault... but you can't see the code stored in the 1693. Do not panic yet... 1693 could mean ANYTHING - big or small.
People sure jump to unfounded conclusions and you didn't search much. 1693 is discussed much as a companion code. Also noted is the fact that pulling codes with the key doesn't always give complete information. Also discussed is the chain store tool loan program which includes a scanner. Finally, 1 of the VP rebuilders has a long detailed description on how to diagnose VP failure. They are very expensive to replace just because they MIGHT be bad.
