2001 2500 Start Problems
My dads 2500 has been starting hard the past week. He changed both batteries Friday put a new starter on in June a new alt. in may I checked all connections but it still turns over real slow like a battery is dying and it might turn over 15-20 times before it hits other than that it runs fine but it just started doing this about a week ago.Does this sound like a starter is going bad again? Thanks for the help.
Does it have a remanufactured starter? I had one once they forgot to put the bushings in it, it started just like your description. Put a volt meter on it and see how low the batteries go while cranking, and check to see if the charging system works. Less than 9 volts cranking is bad.
When you say put a volt meter on it do you mean the starter or battery? I checked the battery and it went to 10.5 but the starter acts like a battery is bad and I climbed under it and when he turns it over it has smoke come out of it after it turns 1 or 2 times. He's worried the inj. pump is not pumping fuel but I told him if the starter isn't turning it over fast enough it would make it harder to start and it seems to do it worse when the engine is warm he said in the morning it starts fine.
It sounds to me like the starter is bad or you have a loose connection. Make sure the bolts are all tight and the connections are clean and tight. If it still smokes after one or two turns change the starter, or you can go to this link and learn how to do voltage drop testing.
