2000 Ram 3500 problem

My friend has a 2000 Ram 3500 CTD. The truck barely idles. It idles like somebody is turning the ignition on and off, over and over again. It also is smoking pretty bad when idling and has a lack of power. Is this the infamous liftpump?

you need to check for codes, by turning the key on, off, on, off, on, and watch the odometer

That's not the LP doing that. What happens at higher RPM under load.

well u cant rule the lift out all the way it can be just hitting on enough injectors to keep it afloat but not enough to run! doe the truck idel on its own or does it idle the die? that will tell you if it is the lift or not it dies its the lift if it runs its not the lift.

Most (but not all) trucks will run with a dead lift pump. The IP will pull it's own fuel from the tank, and run just fine. It just won't pull extra fuel to cool the pump and will damge it. Alot of people don't know they have a bad lp till they change the fuel fillter, and then can't get it to prime. That's why a fuel pressure gauge is need.

My friend says it stays idling but sounds like and old chevy bigblock with a sick cam in it. He also says that if you rev it up and clear it up, the idle smooths out. When its idling rough, it has no power but after you clear it up, it runs ok. It is also smoking pretty bad, escecially when idling rough. I'm starting to think he has one if not more leaky injectors but I'm open to your input.

What about the codes? With out them, we would just be guessing. bad injectors are way down on the list.

Codes were water in fuel which he fixed that and replaced all the filters and the second code was ignition timing.

I got the diagnostic report from the dealer.the ecm is fine and the lp and ip is not quite dead but its well on its way out and didn't have much life left.they tested all 3 parts the IP,LP,and the ECM the LP and IP cam back bad.they are doing all the up grades to the LP system and replaceing the IP.

The only code left now is a PO216 (injection pump timing failure). So, what does this mean?

That's the one code you really don't want...
It means its about time for a new IP
