1999 3500 Needs Inexpensive Code Reader
The truck I just purchased has been running great for 1000 miles and still appears to be but the check engine like just came on this morning on the way home from work.
What is a good basic (inexpensive) code reader just to find out what the code(s) might be? I live 15 miles from town and dont want to drive the truck to go to a repair shop to find out what is wrong in case there "IS" something really wrong.

The OBD connector is at the bottom of the dash (not quite under) near the ashtray. I bought an Innova 3030 at Schuck's for 69.95 and it was about the cheapest one out there. It works fine at reading and clearing codes but the little monitor icons designed to dazzle and amaze you don't show when using it on our trucks because of their age. All those icons do is show which monitors are supported by the vehicle under test which is not a vital function when reading codes and diagnosing anyway. Don't need 'em. Those icons show up when connected to my neighbor's 2001 2500 though.
