1998.5 24 Valve - Cold Engine Hard Start
1998.5 24 Valve - Cold Engine Hard Start
Hey Guys,
I recently replaced the head gasket on my truck and now I've been having hard start issues when cold. Before the replacement the truck would fire up right away with no issues, but now if it's left overnight it cranks for about 30 second before starting. I thought it may have been losing prime so the connector tubes have been taken apart again, but there are no sign of any leaks in the fuel system downstream of the VP44. I have a FASS pump at the tank and even if I let it run for 30 seconds before trying to start I still have the same problem.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for the help.
Cheers,

Hi Sammy3400
What are your overnight temps?
Are you plugging the block heater in?
Are your grid heaters in good working condition/connected/firing?
What causes you to believe it is a fueling issue?
Have you pulled any ECM codes?

Since the truck has hard starting after the head gasket replacement, here are a few things to check:
Air in the Fuel System
Even though you don’t see leaks, air could still be trapped in the system. Double-check the connector tubes, injectors, and fuel lines to ensure they’re all properly tightened and sealed.
Fuel Pump Check
Even with the FASS pump, make sure it’s working correctly. If the lift pump is weak, it might not be supplying enough fuel to prime the system. You can test the fuel pressure at the VP44 to confirm it’s within the correct range.
Injector O-rings
Inspect the injector O-rings. A small air leak here could cause hard starting.
Check for Fuel Filter Issues
A clogged or improperly installed fuel filter could cause a delay in fuel flow, leading to hard starts.
Timing and Compression
If the timing was affected during the head gasket replacement, it could cause starting issues. Make sure the timing is set properly and that compression is good on all cylinders.
VP44 Pump Issue
If the VP44 pump is struggling to maintain pressure, it could cause longer cranking times. Consider testing the pump or checking for any related codes.
Glow Plugs
Since this is a cold start issue, check the glow plugs and relay. If they aren’t working correctly, they might cause hard starts in colder conditions.
It’s good you’ve already checked the fuel system, so focusing on these areas should help you find the cause.
