One of the company trucks is in the shop right now, because the branch that had it says it has no power, low fuel economy, etc.
It is a 02 3500 CTD, automatic, 4wd. New IP, LP. 133,000mi.
Overhead says 6.6mpg
Codes are 0234 Overboost and 0716 Overheat code.
I pulled turbo, the waste gate was seized shut. I got it freed up and saw that there are two cracks opposite each other in the hole where the waste gate seats. Is that bad?
Could too much boost weaken the head bolts and hurt the HG?
Im not sure about the overheat code? how hot does it have to get to set that code? WHen I got the truck in the shop, it was low coolant, but would not over heat under normal driving. The guys that had the truck said the headgasket was shot, but never did any diagnosis, so I am not sure how they came up with that. It may have a bad heater core, the smell in the cab may have suggested it for them.
This was and good truck last year, but it has really been thrashed.
THe trans fluid was so black and stinky(I mean Gag a maggot smelly). I am writing in a new transmission in the estimate for repair. It does seem sloppy and doesnt shift very quickly.
A rough estimate is $2000 for new auto, $1000 for turbo, 1200 Tires, 500 Ball joints, tie rod ends, (maybe they'll find money for a Smarty)
My questions are:
What should I do about the turbo?
What about the codes?
What to do about the head gasket? Pressure test cooling system?
The company may sell the truck if the cost of repair is too hi.

If everything has been kept stock, I don't think you have to worry about the HG. Check the coolant for engine oil and coolant for contamination from the other... that'll start your HG diagnosis.
You should be able to get a stock turbo for way less than 1K... I have a take off turbo from my truck....
I don't really know about your overheat code... I'd imagine the overboost code came from your non-functioning wastegate.
Nice quote from the Chickster....
