Question 01 decision

I currently drive an 84 6.9 E350,nice and simple reliable.It may need a rebuild
(currently running smooth)and the front end needs work. A few days ago a fellow carpenter friend of mine said that he wants go back to school to get his masters and is selling his o1 24v. It has 120,000 xtra cab l-bed 4x4 2500
w/factory? 1ton override lift. recently(2 mos ago) rebuilt transmission,replaced fuel pump,brakes and a few others.In good shape daily driver. Is asking about 15,000,seems like a fair deal,but after reading some of the posts on here should I stay away? Was going to have my diesel mech check it this week. Feedback appreciated.

I just paid 6 for my 01 with 169k. It needed a little work (sensors, brakes, and basic maintainance). It has a new paint job and a rebuilt transmission. Some will say stay away but whatever you do get a fuel pressure gauge right away if you do decide to get it. I figure when my LP goes out ill replace it with a FASS system.

Welcome to the DTR!
Which fuel pump replaced? Lift pump or Injector Pump?
Rear brakes drum (2001), or disk (2001.5)?
53 Engine Block? Read HERE
Questions worth asking.

Price sounds reasonable for well maintained, know, Quad Cab, LB, 4x4 truck... with new injector pump and disk brakes! The newer (rebuilt) injector pumps seem to be holding up well and rear brakes are much prefered... but I would stay away from a 53 block.

Good Luck

woodnnails,

I once had an '01 auto 4 door 4x4. I sold it within a year of buying it new back to Dodge. It was built in St Louis. When I got it, it had a sticker on the window that said it had been pulled from the line as a quality assurance test truck for the rest of the line. It came with a crooked front bumper, stearing wound not return to center doors would whisle do to mis-alignment, could not tow in OD with a small 6K lb load and tranny would slip when towing. And to top it off got 14MPG and it has one of the loudest engines out of all the years Dodge has put the cummins in the truck. I sold it and went back to the 12V truck.

I now have a '97 (currently for sale) and an '05. I love both trucks. I actually tried selling the '05 first but no one seemed interested so I put the '97 up. I would like to keep both, I really like both, but one must go.

I've had a '95, two '97, '01 and '05. The only one I did not like was the '01. Not saying your friends truck is bad, I'm just telling you my experience.

Edit: The '01 was built in St. Louis. All the other truck I had were built in Mexico. I don't know if that makes a difference to quality but some think it does. I have had no problems with my trucks that were built in Mexico.

Good Luck,
Tom

Go read that link for the long version, but basically it will have a 53, 54, 55, or a long series of smaller numbers. If it has ANYTHING but a 53 you are good to go.

I'd say the price is right, you are getting it from a friend so you have a better idea of it's history, miles are not very high, sounds like it has had all the troublesome problems looked into. I say take it to your mechanic, have him do a once over, if it checks out fine and you want that truck buy it. You can only get so much from peoples opinions over the internet, some people will be pretty jaded and tell you to run screaming the other way, others will tell you to buy it as soon as you can, it's hard to tell where they are coming from and if you should really listen to them (should you listen to me? ), so sometimes you just gotta trust your gut and what you want to do.

I agree but not being familiar with these things thought Id ask. Just looked on both sides
for the 53 and did not see any numbers.Does that mean that I missed it?
IT turns out that the transmission was not rebuilt and that it was a sensor that was replaced.Apparently it was the fuel deliverypump that was replaced.
Does that mean the injector pump is due to go soon? Has rear disk and banks
4" exhaust. By the way this just came along, what I want is whatever is least likely to be a pita. Thanks again

Yup, Probably missed it! Not always easy to find. Go under drivers side in front of frt wheel (i think)and look on bottom of block.... next to oil pan! May need wet rag to wipe off Dust, grease,oil, etc. If serious about this truck,,,take the VIN # to a dealer and get a 'build sheet". Lists all factory components...incl. where it was make. Good info,

Delivery pump???
Injector Pumps do go out...$1,000.00. Lift pumps do go out.... $140.00. Both usually fail under 200,000 miles. Stock HP trucks seem to last longer... sometimes! As said, if you like the truck.... don't walk away because of the pumps, but run away if 53 block. Just my $.02.

1's & 02's are great trucks!! Best of 2nd Gens... arguably the best of all CTD's, IMO. No truck is trouble free so ....... Your call!

I wouldn't worry too much about the 53 blocks, I think the problem is blown out of proportion and problems that a few members have had seem to be isolated cases. I have a 53 block with 179k miles on it and it has no problems.

Sounds like a nice truck, I say go for it...especially since you already know the owner.

Thanks boilermaker.Looks like good news anyways.I just got back from rechecking and could not find a 50-anything.A little forward from where the 53's were in all the pictures and obscured by the large bundle of wires was 5C with a 12 next to it and some misc. numbers and letters above it, all about 5/8" tall. Im calling the mechanic tomorrow. Thanks for everyones input.

THank you
CTD=Cummins Turbo Diesel
Bombing=more HP(bigger injectors, programmers, etc.)
VP44=Bosch Injection Pump The lift pump (fuel delivery pump) supplies fuel to the VP that injects the fuel into the motor

I love my '01.
