Really no one wants to answer. I own two 01's one says it came equipped with California emissions and the other does not. I would really like to know what is or was on the Cali emissions truck.

50 state muffler and resonator,no cat. That year I believe the Calif trucks were inspected individually. Turbo and fuel pump may be required to be stock also depending on the smog tech.

The smog guidelines aren't "year" specific as the same requirements pertain to all diesels between '98 to current. The differences are that not all trucks have the same emissions components. This means that the smog tech is supposed to know what your truck year was equipped with in regards to smog emissions components, and only base the "visual" inspection on that information. Thats where things get screwed up, because there data for this information is minimal and smog tech guys have been known to make people pay to change something on their truck which was never smog related or considered as an emissions component from the factory for that year truck. In combination to the factory emissions components, there can be no alterations which affect or change the factory fueling, mechanical or electrical.

For instance, in regards to the OP question..... A '01 Dodge Cummins has ZERO emissions components. What that means is when you pull up for a smog check, the tech can only make sure there is no electronic timing/fueling box, and make sure the truck passes the throttle snap test for excess smoke. So, nothing pertains to exhaust, intake or any other bling under the hood since that truck has no smog emissions on it. Matter of fact, its an open loop venting system with no EGR. They cant even check for injectors since they cant see them. But if you do have larger injectors then you just better hope that they dont smoke during the snap test. Thats it..... But as I stated, most smog techs will try to tell someone that their aftermarket exhaust or aftermarket intake isnt legal.....but their wrong as long as those components were not related to smog emissions. And on the '98.5 to '02 trucks, they weren't.
