0-60 mph

Hello, I am trying to get my 01 3500 dually running right. I changed the fuel filter today and it did help.... but I don't know how bad it is running. I just bought it. It has 4:10's with auto tranny.

It took 19.5 secs to reach 60 mph. How bad is this?

Thanks!

Please fill out the rest of your signature so we know what kind of truck you got so we can help you better.

Do you have a FP gage?

I checked mine with a G-Tech in 2001 in stock trim:

0-60 mph 13.48 seconds
216 rear wheel HP
1/4 mile 19.33 seconds at 72.1 mph

Well considering my truck, w/ the Comp (wire untapped, at that time) my 0-60 was right around 14.6-14.9. We all know the 6 spds are the fastest CTD's on the road, so I'd say your 0-60 time is about right what you might expect.

I do not have a FP guage. I took it to a dealer today and they put a guage on the valve located on the IP. They said pressure is good.
I rented a code reader from a local parts store. I got 2 codes.

Codes:

P0216 - Injection timing control circuit malfunction. Fuel injection pump timing failure.

P1..... something 89 or 98 - Something with a communication error. I have it wrote down out in the truck.

The dealer said it could be old codes since the truck has a refurbished IP on it. Or that pump is possibly going south. They said they would have to do more diagnostics to determine that.
I changed the fuel filter and the truck did run better. I just drove the truck in from Florida. (to Missouri) about 1300 miles. The truck ran steady, but no power. It would not accelerate very good. It seemed to accelerate better with a small amount of throttle. If you floor it then let off the pedal it seemed to hit a spot where it would take off a little. (Still not very good).
Today the truck would not accelerate at all. Would take several seconds to get the tach to 2000. I was on a small incline and the truck would not back up it. I had to put it in 4 low to get it up the hill. Then it went back to running like it was on the trip. Did the same thing later today. Then ran fairly okay again. No engine light through any of this.
The dealer told me $1800.00 for a new pump. Maybe a little less if its not a HO. Wow......!!
I filled out my sig. Hope it shows up.

Thanks,

Brian

Looking at that injection pump quote from dealership, ouch!!!! How about getting that pump rebuilt? A diesel mechanic bud of mine always sent his out for rebuilding. Usually took about 4 days or so. However, the down side to this is, if you ain't never pulled an injection pump, it isn't easy or fun. Did that quote include labor?

good luck

My truck bone stock would do in the high 15's.

You have 4.10 gears and more HP stock than mine did, it should do alot better then mine stock.

Check injection pump, map sensor, APPS sensor. It does sound like the injection pump though.

If it is the injection pump check with some of the vendors in the links page, you use to be able to get a pump for around $800.00 or less, of course that does not include labor.

$1800 is about right for VP44 from Dodge. I don't think I've seen them for anything under $1500 anywhere. Unless your over 100k or truck's been tampered with it is covered by warranty.

Sparkyone: Yes the price does include labor, I have not asked about rebuilding it but I will tomorrow.

Bluebull: Yeah you are right, it should be alot better. I took the truck in for diagnostics late yesterday. They called today and said the Lift Pump had good pressure but low volume and needed to be replaced before they could test the injector pump. I told them to go ahead..... well let it rain! The injector pump is till throwing the same codes so it needs replaced too!!!

Around $500.00 for the lift pump installed and now $1800.00 for the injector pump ..... AND the heater core is leaking - I was quoted $700-$750 for this one~~! They said they could bundle it together and save a little.

Rattletrap1: The truck has 123,xxx on it. I recently bought it thinking that the engine was just getting broke in. Instead I'm getting broke. I got ride of a PSD because I thought the CTD would pull our 18,000 lb rv better. I haven't even pulled it yet to see how it is going to do. I hope it pulls it good after this.... My wife is going to kill me..... SLOWLY!

Thanks for the replies.

I don't remember where you can buy an injection pump for well under $1,000.00 but there have been more than a few places that sell them. Do a search on injection pumps, or check the links, check with cummins, if it were my injection pump and my money thats what I would be doing and then get a quote from cummins on how much to install or do the installation myself.

Just reread your last reply, if you just recently bought the truck it is a good possability the truck had these defects when you bought it. Talk to the dealership you bought it from and maybe they will give you a price break. Worth a shot.

0-60 time is really high...especially with the auto. Unfortunatly with heavy duty trucks, the auto is the faster of the 2.....unless you have it sown too an absolute science. Even Motor Trend says that the autos are quicker, basically only because of trying too shift those clunky heavy trannies as appoased too letting the auto doing it.....and there is no loss of boost with the auto!!

just my 0.02

Well I asked about a remaned pump and they told me they only installed new ones.
I have already authorized them to complete the work.

bluebull: I have been in touch with the place I bought the truck and they did finally agree to help with some of the costs. Not all of them.... but some is better than none!

Ramtd02: You are right about the 0-60 being way off. I also own a 97 ford PSD. ... (shssssss!) I did a quick run with it and it was right at 12 seconds. It has 4:10s and auto. (I am going to get rid of this truck because its 2 wheel drive and it isn't a CUMMINS!! but the main reason is my wife says so.

DRESSER DAVE: Thanks for the number. I am keeping it for future use. After doing alot of reading on this group and reading the Haynes manual I bought.... I really think I could do the work myself. I'm fairly handy with a wrench. The only thing that would bother me would making sure I don't get dirt in anything while I have it apart. I know dirt and injectors don't mix.....

With the help from where I bought the truck the price is okay now. Whew!

I guess bombing is going to have to wait until after the holidays!

Thanks for the replies.
