axle jam nut

axle jam nut

do they make a special socket to get the jam nut off? I tried an assortment of punches and chisels to get it lose but it is just to tight. I have a spindle socket for a D44 but it is to small. the notches line up but not wide enough. These are normal threads correct? not left handed??

anyone have any other suggestions or tips?

It's a 2-9/16'' nut and you need a thin-wall axle nut socket. Usually, you can get them loose with a hammer and punch. They are standard threads. There should be a little retainer than presses into the slot on the spindle--did you remove that?

Oops, my bad. I'm not familiar with the newer style front d-60 my 2-9/16'' works up front on mine.

I got my '92 d60 front apart with my old trusty broken and slightly bent skrewdriver. Make sure the tab is not bent up in any of the slots. They make a special socket. There was a thread on it a couple of weeks ago.

will that work on the jamb nut too? i read the post about it and believe the person was asking for the axle nut it self.

the circled part is what i can't get off.


this is where it is when installed in the hub


the bugger is really on there. i bent a screw driver to get a better angle on it but i ended up busting it. don't know what else to do. i am going to try the other side and see if i have any better luck.

Yes, that is the tool you'll need. When you're done with it send it to me, I've got a rotor to replace.

If you were a little closer I would let you use mine. I got mine from the local auto parts store, can't remember if it was Advanced or National. One of them should have that socket in stock to either buy or rent.

well i got the other side done no problem, i will have to make another trip to the parts store to find the right tool

Please Put This In The Sticky!!!!

I wish they would put this info in the sticky. I wrestled for a week to get the right socket, umpteen trips at $4/ gal had me fried. The proper spindle nut socket is CTA tools#4165. The socket for a dana44 will NOT work, as the one pictured above will not either. The Tool is a round socket, double thickness where it fits over the nut with 4 pieces of square stock protrudig into it at 12 3 6 and 9 o'clock. The Lisle tool combo socket is real close but after $35 and modifying it, it did not work. That was part #27400---No good. I tried others and returned also. PITA. Socket description must clearly state it fits 4500# dodge front axle. The CTA model works perfect, was only $20. and is avail at Bumper to Bumper stores.

I dont know why, but my dana60 front had the 2 9/16 nuts on the front. Made me cranky cause I have dana 44 and 60 normal nut sockets. (the weird lookin things) Dontcha love trips to the part store for a tool after the trucks all ripped apart?

I've posted asking about this before and was told it was a KD 3246, which looks like the NAPA socket. I've also been told its an OTC 7158, which looks like what you're describing, fits around the nut and prongs come in from the side. I looked in my 1993 Dodge service manual and it says to use "wrench 7158", maybe they're referring to that, it didn't specify a brand so I don't know for sure. I haven't personally tried either of these sockets, but I'm going to order the OTC one this week. Both of these sockets are available from places online. I will post when I get the socket whether or not it works. Socket part #'s(once verified that they work) should be in the stickys, along w/ the size socket for the earlier D60 and the one for the rear D70.

What year is your front axle, and was just the outer nut that or both of them?

Try this, these are all I had to try to finally find that #4165 is the proper one even though it is not the one that says it fits a dodge. Good luck, put this in the sticky!!!!.
