Wobble!

Hey all, driver side tire wobbles. Passenger side looks good, my brother noticed it the other day coming down the drive way. I got out and when he came down the drive way with me looking it was really bad. I don't feel it in the truck, where do I even start? Bad king pin?

sure it's not a smudge of mud or something creating an optical illusion??? Bent wheel??? If it was a kingpin or something really out of whack, you'd definitely feel it driving

I have seen wheels get bent if there steel, you could check that. If not I would say check out your king pins or possibly even the king pin bushings under the top cap

First thing would be to jack it up and see if it really wobbles. Put something on the ground next to the jacked up wheel and spin it.

That's a great start, now while it's up (and supported WELL) grab the tire and try wiggling it. Top/bottom, front/back. Put a pry bad under the tire and do up and down. That will help. I did this to find my upper king pins were bad. Disassembled them to find the nylong bushings under the spring were broken. Just replacing those bushings should only take 2 hours. Pretty easy job if it's the case. If you see no wiggle at the king pin but it is wiggling, suspect wheel bearings.

Brand new tires and wheels so I'm okay there. I will get her up on the lift Saturday. I'm taking the transfer case out to start the rebuild on that. In the mean time I will check the wheel out.

You say brand new wheels and tires, did the wobble start after you put them on? Maybe a defective wheel or tire...Mark

Nope, you can actually see the entire wheel wobble. I'll get it up on the lift and move it up and down/side to side and see what happens. It might be the washer in the king pin so I will have to check that out as well.

are you talking about the spring retainer? If that is bad, then you definitely should replace your king pins. My retainer was distorted from the uneven support from the failed bushing and caused the lower king pin to start cracking, not good. See here ...Mark

I'm not sure, I'll have to get under it and take a look. I'm thinking it might be a wheel bearing. I'll have to look at it this weekend. Remove the t-case and then I'll check that if I have time. I have a lot of work to do on my project truck but it's cold as hell. Going to be 50 degrees this weekend so I'm going to start haha.

Yup, always start with the simplest solution first. Yeah, we are cold today at 65, but don't fret for us because we'll see 80 by the weekend. All my citrus trees are blooming in Feb.. We already only have hot and not hot as our 2 seasons, but, I'm afraid the not hot season is going away...Mark
