Wiring Info needed

OK, burnt up yet another headlight switch, so am gonna break down and put a relay on the running light circuit.
Looking at the switch connectors I am about 50% certain that the wire I need to splice into is the Black with Green tracer that is centered on the switch and next to the power feed, but I want to double check this before cutting into anything!
i cant find it on the wiring schematic in the stickey, so do any of yall know if this is the right one?

Looks like the right one to me. As long as that wire is hot when the switch is in the park lamp setting it will work to trigger a relay for the running lamps.

yes, but there are also separate feeds for the gauge lamps, cab light, and such on their that are hot when the switch i sin the "first" position...so I want to be sure I am getting the tail-lamp and running lamp feed...

Ok, I think it is the L7 wire shown in the 91.5 wiring diagrams( image 24 ), but I cant read that diagram well enough to tell if that will get the running lights as well as the tail lights??

Just logged on to my Alldata account and it tells me that the L7 wire is a 18BK/YL (18 gauge black w yellow) to the rear lighting. Is the truck you are working on the one in your sig? Cause mine is a 93 also.

Yep, the grey ghost!

I pull a large trailer often, and the draw through the headlight switch when I am running the trailer lights tends to smoke the switches.
I know the easy thing would be to simply put the relay on the trailer plug harness or replace all the trailer lights with LED's, but figured since these trucks are known to smoke the switches regardless, Id go ahead and put it on the entire circuit.
Im now about 95% certain that L7 is the correct wire, and I just need to make sure I install the relay before that first wiring connection off the switch, but want to be 100% before cutting into the light circuits and potentialy creating more problems than I solve!

I just looked in my 93s FSM---Page 8W-43 diagram 1, "L7 18BK/YL Parking lamps,Tail lamps,License lamp,Front side marker lamps, Radio display intensity,Clearance and Identification lamps". The E1 18TN is the power to the circuit and it is 3 amp fused.

now the only issue is: will I burn the wiring harness up putting straight 12V thru it ?

Shouldn't be a problem. With a relay voltage should stay at 12v and keep the amperage in check.

Have you checked the voltage drop from the cab to the rear lights? My rear lights were very dim and when I checked them I had 12v at the cab and 9v at the rear of the truck. In my case the wires corroded from the back to the front in the wire creating the resistance. I wound up cutting back the harness and putting in a sealed trailer wiring box on my frame and coating everything inside it with dielectric grease. I have a 24' Econoline that I tow, it has 11 clearance lights and two tail lights plus whats on my truck. This year I changed the trailer to LEDs.

Just at the switch itself I have a 3V drop! I havent had issues with the lights themselves, its the cheap POS switch that builds resistance, then heat, then melts! LOL..

Ill take some pics of the relay install, hope to get to it this weekend.

Got the relay in, was a very simple straight forward job once I was certain of the wiring, and it made a HUGE difference in both the trailer running/tail lights and the trucks marker lights! WOW

Good to hear! If you can, post some pics. It would be nice to see, especially since I have such a voltage drop and might be doing the same.
