will 307 gears with getrag 5 speed work ?

Hi ... I cant make up my mind if I sould swap my 410 gears with 307 gears . I do most of my driving in the foothills and the 410's are great . But when I get on the freeway I am looking for another gear or two . Would the 307's be to high and cause to much heat for the getrag ? Thanks for your inf. ( AND How do you add to my discription on what I have added to my truck like you all have done ...new member here Thanks

To add a signature go to user cp and click edit signature. 3.07's with a getrag are awesome but it may not be the best if you tow heavy alot.

Gear Vendors has your solution. I just put one in, love it:

Best of both worlds, awesome 4.10 towing capability and low rpm highway cruising selectable with the flick of a switch.

Umm, you could compromise with 3.54s you know.

With 3.07s you will have to swap entire housings as the 3.07/Dana 71 (and 61 if 4wd) are a unique setup. The carrier and housing are offset to allow for a large pinion.

If you are not towing heavy then 3.07's would be great!

With the 4:10's (assuming 235/85-16's), at 60 MPH you are running 2600 RPM in 4th and 2000 RPM in 5th. With 3.54's, that drops to 2250 and 1730, and with 3.07's you are at 1950 and 1500 - with 3rd becoming usable turning 3100 RPM @ 60 MPH!

Definitely run the 3.07's if you aready have them--that's a no-brainer. The whole swap won't take but half a day, and if you don't like it after a month, swap back and sell the 3.07's for the small fortune they're worth

I run around town and the back roads in 3rd or 4th, and use 5th mainly on the interstate. I do some heavy towing also and when pulling steep grades I will definately do more gear jamming than with the 4.10's but in my case anything was better than the slushbox making heat. You could always keep the 4.10s and run bigger tires.

I wonder how tall a tire would become unmanageable with 3.07s? Certainly, tire options would be a great reason to stay with the 4.10.

I thought that a 355 rear and 235-85-16 tires with a getrag would run at 2075 rpms at 70 mph, in 5th gear, If your info here is correct Dave, I need to reset my tach!
Peter.

The info I posted is for 60 MPH (a sane towing speed). For 70 MPH the RPM in 5th are 2340, 2025, and 1750 respectively.

I have 265's on the truck now and after I get the 2.5" lift on (if Summit ever gets it to me) I want to run 285's. I have no probs with the tires on it now in fact I usually start in 2nd gear unloaded on the level. I did turn the anaroid(sp) aka smoke screw in 1 turn and that helps a little 'tween shifts.
