What Turbo?

I have a 92 w250 totally stock with 5 sp and 245000 miles. Turbo took a dump and was wondering, stock turbo or upgrade and what is involved in upgrading. Also where is a good place to get a turbo? Dont want to go too expensive because this is a work/plow truck. Cummins dealer wants about 800 for a stock turbo. Too much? Holset dealer wants about 950 for a hx35 but don't know if I have to change downpipe and get an outlet. I plan on keeping the truck mostly stock.Any help is appreciated thanks

There were a couple HX35's in the classifieds.

he351cw off 3rd gen 5.9s is the best performing turbo you can get of a ram truck
any turbo from a newer 5.9 ram truck would be an upgrade

Don't pay those prices.

Get a used HX35 or H1c.

I think the stock turbo housing is a 18cm? are the smaller ones a lot better or just a little. If I go with a hx35 do I need the bent outlet and downpipe off the second gens?

A smaller housing would be ok with your 5 speed. Just keep an eye on egt's while towing. If you find a HX of a 12 valve they have the same output as your H1C. Or you can always put your housing on the HX. I believe the outlet is about an inch further to the firewall so a little modification would be in order!!!

All HX35's have a 12cm wastegated housing... great fun spooling around town but kinda restrictive on the top end if running alot of fuel.

91.5-92 H1c's have 21cm housing and 93's and ALL non i/c trucks have the much nicer 18.5 cm.
