FWIW,
You will probably have to go to a specialty fastener store to get the grade-8 stud.
Don't be tempted to use a piece of all thread, it may strech or snap off inside the gear and cause more problems.
Lube the stud where the nut contacts the washer.

Does the vacuum power anything else other than the brakes? My pedal is now getting hard but everything else seems to work.

KRB, it also powers your heater controls, but I believe they stopped using the diaphragm pump in the intercooled models
I found a pretty informative vid on you tube detailing testing your vac system and brake booster

Also runs cruise control and goes to low vacuum sensor below driver's side hood hinge.

I still have cruise so it might be my booster.

Thanks for the video Nonrev, I'll have to dig out my vacuum gauge and check my booster now. Pretty cool to find a video specifically for our trucks. I also noticed he has one on the rotors & king pins which I'll watch. I did the passenger side king pin already (about a year ago) and need to do the drivers side plus rotors now.

89-91 Dodge Diesel vacume pump

The diaphragm vacuum pumps can't be resealed, only replaced at the cost of about $160 each. The vein type pumps can be resealed. The reseal kit for the vein type pumps is Cummins P/N 4089742.
I just ordered two of the

Dorman 904-809 Vacuum Pump for Select Dodge Models

canisters (new) from Amazon for $87.87 each

Excellent writeup! Just did this. Only thing i find strange that after its all together, the gear can move up and down from the housing about a 16th of an inch. So i took ik apart again and found its the shaft of the power steering pump that can move up and down a bit. Its brandnew. So i checked my old one and it too does that. So should be good. Just find it very strange as i cant see why that gear should be able to move up and down while spinning so fast. @U2slow checked his pump for me and said his gear doesnt move up and down a bit. The intercooled style pump i have laying around also doesnt. Again, i find it strange and dont feel good about putting it on a brandnew engine...
