what are the different symtoms of a dead injection pump?

Hi,
Dont know if some of you read my previous post, but my truck has taken to dying for no reason. Checked all of the fuel supply, new fuel filter, new lift pump, pressurized the tank etc. So far I have come up with nothing.

It keeps dying with air in the lines. Bleed the lines, fires back up, goes for another ? amount of time before it loses power, get the dead pedal and stalls.

I checked my shutoff solenoid, connections are tight, it clicks with the key. When i pulled it out I noticed some metallic "dust" in the recess where the solenoid screws in. I dont know if this is from the hammer/chisel method of getting it out, or what...
The plunger looked fine, no abnormal wear, then again i dont know what a new one looks like.

Sooo... does this sound like dead ip? Or am I overlooking something stupid?

maybe the pickup broke off in the tank and when you drive it sucks air

Does it seem to do it when the tank is low on fuel? Possible the internal pickup in tank allowing air into fuel line. I had that problem with my truck I had to replace fuel module in fuel tank. Check all external lines for cracks or corrosion in steel lines first. Then if you still see air bubbles most likely tank module. Put some air pressure in tank a few pounds only see if any lines leak. Good Luck

The tank is about a gallon short of full. When I blow in the line it bubbles. When i suck on the line i get a mouth full of diesel.
When i floor it when its working properly (alive pedal) it builds boost fast and egts get up there now. Which would say to me that fuel supply is not an issue. And would also rule out bad fuel. I would think. And also would rule out bad injection pump too?

Should I try gutting the solenoid even though it looks good? Seems to me its the only thing that could be as intermittent as my problem...
Im starting to run out of things to look for...

Also, as long as I remember, the boost was always slow to build, and wouldnt hit the wastegate the first time I floored it. (when warm of course). I wonder if this is the same issue, but more prominent.

All i want for xmas is my truck back... bah.

what does it do if you dont go to full throttle?
how long can you drive it before it dies? or does it only die after full throttle?

It drives normally. This stalling has been totally random. The other day I fired it up and it didnt fire normally. I figured it was because i parked it on a hill. It has started weird when on hills before.
Then it died about 1000 feet down the road. Bled 3 lines, it fired off. Died again another 400 feet up the road. Did the same thing all day. Sat for 2 days at work, fired it off, drove it all the way home the long way.??!! Its been totally random like that the whole time.

I get cheesed off and walk on er and shes fine. Like today, drive 10km, died twice in 1000 feet, bleed a couple lines, take off, by then its warm so I stepped on it, she was fine all the way back the other way. It stalls at totally smooth and level driving situations. And never after I was givin er.

And my mouth still tastes like dizl...

i was thinking your lift pump could be bad, if it was after a wot run and thats why you have to re prime it, but guess not

have you ever taken ur injection pump apart? it's really not to bad, i had exactly the same problem, turns out the injection pump sucked some foreign material in so i cleaned it up internally and put it back in and it runs perfectly fine now, i think this could be your problem.

How apart? Im not too concerned with taking the top off, but im not sure about the rest of it...

i took the entire top off of it like one half that can come apart thats under the 366 spring area, its really not that bad, where we did find all the gunk though was on the back side of the injection pump where all the lines come out of the pump to each cylinder, but just where those lines come out of you take those fittings out and there are a few small spring and piston kind of deal and if you pull them out and take the apart youll see there may be gunk in the little canals, ill try and find a picture so you can see what i mean. i can take the whole block off the back of the pump there are 4 alan key bolts or hex bolts and you can take it off and clean it on the bench.

if you look to the far right you will see 3 but will be 6 studs sticking out of the back of the pump, thats where the lines go onto, undo those one at a time and pull it out carefully, and tip them up so you do not loose the pieces as you pull them out and ther will be a washer then a spring and a little shaft and 2 other little pieces that slide into each other i think thats the order they went in, but you will see when you take it out then just clean them if there is anything and try to keep the finger prints off of them also. it's really not that bad to do.

you can do this while it's in the truck, if you feel the need to be over the fender for a few minutes, if not you can take the pump out, that was a pritty easy task to, but first i will see how you feel about doing this or if you want someone to do it for you. if you think it needs to comes to this far, but i couldent see anything braking off in the tank all of a sudden

Those things are delivery valves right?
It doesnt sound that hard. Pull the pump away from the head and start pullin lines...

yes they are, dont even have to take the pump off, just remove throttle linkages and make it workable and youll be fine.mabe put a pan under the pump a little one just incase you drop something

Before you dive into the injection pump, pull the fuel tank & replace the filter inside the tank.
It's MOPAR part #04864307. . . mine was acting like that. it got worse & worse over a years time. The filter was plugged almost solid.

BTW .. .it's a paper filter about 1.5 in tall & as big around as the fuel module.
