What is this button?

The door closes easier if i remove it. It doesn’t seem to do anything but it seems attached to the retractor by a cable or wire.

When door is open, the button releases the seatbelt reel allowing belt to freewheel.

Thanks! I don't think it is serving its intended purpose. The seat belt does the same thing whether the door is open or closed - retracts limply half way and hangs there. (insert wiener joke)

Mine does the same (on the truck) but I never noticed that button before. What year is yours? 89-91?

After 30 years the spring in the retractor has weakened to the point that it won't pull the seatbelt back in. I wonder if anyone makes a new replacement.

I would pull it apart and clean and lube the mechanism.

I guess why mine doesn't have it. Must have been part of the 1991 design changes.
