Unhappy Well, it broke down

Well, went to pull a car home yesterday afternoon. When I got to the car I parked and walked to the rear and saw the tow dolly cover in gear oil. The rear differential was losing fluid out of the front seal. It was dripping pretty steady and had covered the bottom of the bed as well. So, I am pulling it apart this week and will see what in need to replace.

Does anyone have any idea of what went out or heard of any problems? Thanks

Maybe you got some thing rapped around the yok and tour the seal.

on one of the truck i had bought the previous owner has replaced the muffler back with 2.5 inch pipe, and i was going to be pulling a 5th wheel 1000 miles home. so i hopped under with a hack saw i had bought at Home Depot and cut it off... it was raining and nasty and i needed to get on the road. didn't notice that the exhaust was sorta facing the rear diff. anyways, thank God, it made it home with no problems but developed the leak a day or two later. i just popped a new seal in there (refilled the oil) and fixed the exhaust and haven't had a problem since. it sure will make a mess in a hurry though slinning off the yolk. i say start with the simple stuff, replace that front seal, clean it all up and make sure there is nothing obviously wrong with it and refill the fluid then just keep and eye on it.

Being a farmer you learn it takes nothing to rip a seal, just tall grass can wrap around it and do it, "note" allways drive across a windrow of grass at an angle. I only know two things that can cause it, just a bad seal which is probably it or a bad pinion bearing , but you can tell easy it have play if the bearings going bad.

When you pull the yok, take a real good look at seal surfice of the yok...........if it had a grove in it the new seal will not stop the leak compleatly!
if so the yok will also need to be replace or a $50 speedy sleeve put one!
the speedy sleeve can be a trick all by it's self!!

check the breather vent also, if it gets plugged up with mud then gearbox gets hot, oil go everywhere.

Turns out the front seal went out. No damage to the gears or clutches. So.. I will get it fixed and back on the road. Thanks for the ideas.
