is it weird?

so i replaced my rear wheel seals, wheel bearings and wheel cylinders on the 92 and a few things seemed kinda strange.

my haynes manual said there would be tapered dowels retaining the axle shaft. i had no such thing. not even lock washers. is this normal? The hub retaining nut also did not jive with the haynes manual. i had just the 2 9/16" nut with nylon insert and a little sheet metal retainer.

the parts guy was in disbelief when i brought the bearings to match up. he said his computator says both bearings should be the same, which was the outer bearing, and he thought the larger inner bearing was from a 1 ton truck.

has my rear end been billy bobbed, or is this all par for 92 W250 CTD?

axle shaft is held in by the bolts, I've never taken one apart that had lock washers.

retaining nut just has the little metal retainer you tap in to lock it in place... not sure about the nylon insert.

As far as the wheel bearings, I didn't think that they were the same size but it's been a few months.

sorry, don't think i've been a ton of help... the rear doesn't sounds "billy bobbed" I think billy bob was as the parts store.

That's all stock. Some early ones had studs and tapered cones under them for the axle flange. Part stores almost never get it right. for engine parts I go to cummins and give the CPL # or serial #

Dodge never made two trucks with identical rear-ends.

I once snapped an axle in a rear that came out of a Dodge. I went to the junk-yard to get another and of the at least fifty that I pulled, no two were alike.

There are two SRW Dana equipped Dodge/Cummins in the driveway, one a 1990, the other a 1991.5; the 90 has the tapered cone locks on the axleflanges, and the 91.5 has plain old bolts and the crappy nylock-nut/tiny-metal-clip retainer business.

The double-nut/folding-tab lock-washer set-up is FAR SUPERIOR to the ny-lock nut mess.

I have had numerous ny-lock nuts to get grooved out on the inside, due to the bearing eating into them, thus allowing the bearing adjustment to loosen.

I have NEVER had this happen with the much harder double-nuts.
