Water in the tank, then brakes got hard on my '89
I have been eagerly awaiting the day when I would figure out how to post on here. Here we go, no more lurkin:
After the last big snow here in Minneapolis, there was a proceeding big thaw. Needless to say I had lost my fuel cap, ill positioned by some hack (just bought the truck from Montana in October) to be pointing vertically through the wood on my flat bed. I presume a bit of water got in there but I was not driving it right away after the thaw. I eventually began driving it again and all went well. I stopped to fill up and diesel came spurting right back out at me after a second of pumping. Yup, water in the fill tube. Went home, got that out, a big log of ice it was, and filled up. I let it sit 2 days, went to start it, no go. I had my buddy tow me to the back of my shop, about 500 feet. I used the brakes a little. I got her runnning after some diesel 911, good block heater warm up parked in doors and replacement of an ice filled water separator.
Now my brake pedal is rock hard and really hard to brake with. Brakes were perfect before the incident.
Any ideas anyone?

Yeah of course I couldn't wait any longer so I went and peeked around for vacuum leaks. Sure enough knocked the crusty cracked tip of a little cap off protruding from the master. Plugged it and all is good again.

It sounds to me like you should look over that truck with a jaundiced eye and fix all the obvious stuff.
It'd be a shame to take out a g-note IP because of a cracked hose.

Hey Martin thanks for the suggestion.
Thats the plan, slowly but surely. I intend to replace tranny mounts, front facing transfer case seal and other odds and ends as I notice them.
I am wondering what mods have been performed on the truck as the engine runs rather strong, as I would hope, but it idles down very quickly and is very,very obviously more powerful than my '91 D250. I mean this thing bucks. Another difference from my '91 I notice is a plume of black smoke fog upon hard acceleration.
Over all the truck is clean and runs and drives well. I will still keep a jaundiced eye peeled.

Is the 91 intercooled? Nonintercooled trucks are way more tuneable in stock parts. IC trucks have smaller injectors stock and probably a 91 IC truck would have the 21cm turbo housing (affectionately referred to as the "lagmaster").
