Water Pump time, which one to get?

Well my water pump started leakin a little bit again. Last winter it leaked a little then sealed back up, I think the cold spell the last few weeks made it leak again so I figure its time to replace it. Its not leakin bad and I still drive it but its another thing on the list that needs fixed. So anyways I've heard there is two kinds of water pumps, a closed or an open impeller design... And i couldn't remember which one is better to get? I'll probably be gettin one at Napa or O'reillys.

My 92 had a closed on it. And I replaced it with an open. I don't think it matters. You'll have to watch it with that new gov spring of yours. I've heard that if you turn over 4k It will blow the freeze plugs out of the head.

my 92 had a closed in it. locked up solid on the way home a few weeks ago never leaked out the weep hole. ive got a open from autozone in it now for a few hundred miles and a few 3200rpm (idh a tach yet but i know it revs higher) full throttle runs on it and no issues

hey-Hey!!!,
NAPA had a closed one for $68 and I got that one. I am amazed you've gotten away with a marginal seal for so long; one day mine was good and the next it was leaking nearly a stream.
cheers,
Douglas

same here... i let mine idle for 10-15 minutes and it was fine, drove about 1 mile (about 1/8 until my destination) and i smelt it... steady stream.

My old one was open and I'm on my way to an autoparts store to get a new one. I don't think it makes a difference between open and closed.

well my trucks down for a while so I'll see if i can get one and get it in while its down. Thought I heard the closed ones were better but I think I'll pull mine out first and see what one it is and then get the same one.

I bought a $50 Duralast from Autozone. Told them it was for a '92 after reading about the i/c motors having the closed fin style impeller. I got exactly that. Still running just fine! Spent a 1/4 of the price of a pump from Cummins.

That's only what I read of course. The one in mine I pulled out to replace had an open fin impeller and mine's a non i/c but I couldn't tell you if it was the original pump. I hope it wasn't after 20 years . But I suppose if it lasted that long, that's a good thing! It could very well just be an updated pump for all of them. Maybe see if they can pull one for a '90 and '92, see if the part numbers are different or, if they have them both in stock, compare the 2.

The last two water pumps I've had have been open. The one I put in yesterday was closed. The open ones were from NAPA, and this one was from Autozone I believe.

He's not spinning it up that high yet. He knows he needs studs and 60lbs springs so he controls it with his right foot.

There's always the option of an electric water pump from Haisley.
