VE pump potential

VE pump potential

What is the potential of a VE pump, say with the right amount of air ? I have been working on my friends truck and it is responding great to the pump tweaks. Basically how far can you turn things up before I can't go any further i.e. power screw and such.

First of all, every pump is different.

That said, with stock injectors, the 89-91.5 trucks max in the neighborhood of 300 horsepower, and the 91.5-93 trucks max in the neighborhood of 250 horsepower. With aftermarket injectors as big as they come, the pump itself reaches capacity around 400 horsepower. The aftermarket pump heads available tap out around 600 horsepower.

The stock IP can actually reach 500hp without the 14mm pump head and with it well over 600hp has been reached.

Why is there a power difference? Injectors or pump differences? I believe the truck is a 91 with an intercooler. Any links for the aftermarket pump heads?

Is it common to swap in non-intercooled injectors in an intercooled truck?

Impossible; in 91.5 they added an intercooler, and started drilling smaller injector holes into the heads in order to prevent cracking. So pre-intercooled trucks are prone to cracked heads but have 9 mm injectors; post-intercooled trucks have 7 mm injectors but don't crack as often.

All of the aftermarket injectors for first gens are for 7 mm heads; adapters need to be used to put them in the pre-intercooled models.

I think that the pumps were unchanged throughout the 4 years they were on the trucks. The 14 mm heads, as far as I know, are only available from specialty shops like Piers and are exceedingly rare at this point. (Are they even off-the-shelf units, or are they all custom made?)

Good question. There's been some talk of the non-intercooled DV's being better, but nobody seems to know much about it (at least nobody who's talking).
