upgrades for a HC-1 turbo

I am trying to find out what potental this turbo has.. or anything about it as it does not seem to be talked about much... Is it useless in anything other than a stock truck? For that matter, where do I start learning about the differences between what one turbo will do as compared to another?

It's an H1C. It's not useless in just stock trucks. Moderately to somewhat heavier fueled trucks work great with the H1C.

HTT (www.htturbo.com) makes nice kits to upgrade the H1C. I have the Stage IV which is a HX40 compressor wheel on my H1C. That's about as bad as the good ole H1C can get. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, though!

Good news! but why do you run a H1C on your '93? I thought they were only on the non-IC trucks...?

I upgraded my H1C to a WH1C. From a 18 cm non WG to a 12 cm WG gives me a lot quicker spool up and the wastegate gives me more control over the max boost.

On the compressor side the MAP enhanced housing and wheel allows me to go to higher boost without surging. I had very little trouble mating the larger outlet to my stock non-IC crossover though I would like to have a 3" tube type that another DR poster is engineering for himself. I hope he starts selling them for us folks who don't want the complexity of an intercooler.

Check my galleryfor photos.

All 1st gens had the H1C, but the non-IC guys get what is known as the "baby H1C", the one with a 3" inlet. HTT can get you a stage IV upgrade that will make that H1C not quite as babyish

Thanks for the information. I am beginning to understand, and realize my H1C has plenty of potental.. will look into an exhaust housing change.. Is a 12 Cm the smallest that can be put on, or will a 9cm fit? I sometimes just want a quicker response, other times I get greedy and think that more power is where it is at..

Welcome to DTR, Jason! The 9cm is too small, unless you never want to turn the power up, ever...and you know you're gonna want more I highly recommend the 12cm wastegated housing. It was the factory housing on all 94+12valve trucks and is darn near a must for anybody with a 5speed that daily drives their truck.

I guess saying it's a 'must' for the 5speed is a little strong, but I think it's definitely worth the time to at least try one. I spend most of my time at less than 3/4 throttle, and that's where the 12 really shines. For those WOT blasts, the restriction of the 12 is something I'm willing to live with.

I spend most of my time at less that 1/4 throttle. I just remember the line from that ol' Smokey and the bandit movie, where the guy asks Burt "...so what's the top end on that thing?" to which Burt replies "uuuun-limited..."

i'd say with the 5-speed and 3.07 that under acceleration you have a lot longer than most of us do to spool, so the 16 sounds great. but at the same time your cruising rpm are gonna be lower so the 12 may suit you. look for a cheap takeoff and give it a shot!

I am running a 12 on mine with an auto. Works real good for me right now but I am turning up the fuel and adding bigger sticks 3200 spring on order and old smokey fuel pin on the way. I'll be lookin at a 14cm or a 16cm soon.

Dang man, if I had known this a few weeks ago, I would have traded you my 12WG for your 16!! Sold the 12 and how have a 16 on my truck.

For a 5 spd with stock injectors, I'd vote 12. Heck, just about anything with stock injectors I'd vote a 12. I could even feel the restriction with a turned up pump and stock gov spring, but for the amount of time I spent at WOT vs just cruising, the 12 was WAY better. Got great mileage too!
