Unexpected results to power mods

So I finally got around to grinding my fuel pin. I removed the star wheel and the nylon washer. I thought these mods would increase low end power. It seems opposite. The truck is not as quick taking off like before. But I hit a hill doing 50 in 5th gear and when i laid into it, it flat took off. The needle on my 35 psi boost gauge went past 35. It went to 35 before but never past it. So I'm very impressed with top end but surprised at the lack of performance on the low end. Did I do something wrong? I don't have a tach but the power really seems to kick in at 15 psi of boost. Any ideas? Thanks.

Removed the star wheel??

how is the smoke down low? I am guessing you are flooding the turbo with too much fuel in the low end.

Yeah, sound like you probably have to much low end fuel and choking the turbo

You need to tighten the starwheel not remove it!! Some people back the starwheel off or flip it over if they have big injectors to avoid overfueling at low engine speed. But if your relatively stock tighten the starwheel down for more fueling on the bottum

Run the starwheel up to flush with the bushing/tube it's threaded on to or turn it upside down like Dean said and do the same but be cautious of coil bind with the spring! No starwheel means, no spring tension at all. The fuel pin probably drops to the full fuel profile at 1psi. Rather than a gradual increase.

It doesn't smoke that bad unless I really lay into it. But it smoked before too. I read in a post somewhere that someone took out their starwheel. It's easy to get to so I thought I'd try it. I just figured it would let the fuel pin move easier. Maybe it's moving too soon and over fueling? I had it threaded all the way in before. I might throw it back in and see what it does. I should just change one thing at a time to see the difference in performance. I guess I got too anxious.

Overfueling for sure. Put it in and thread it up until its flush with the tube as said before.

I put the star wheel back in. Much better. I didn't put it flush with the tube. That seems too high. I think the spring would bottom out the diaphragm. I had it all the way down before so I put it one turn up from there. I think I'll play with it some and get it fine tuned. I guess I'm still a little confused. I thought we wanted to put less tension on the spring so the fuel pin slides easier, therefore fueling sooner and quicker? Thanks again for all the replies.

Yes less tension on spring allows the fuel pin to move sooner (more fuel at low boost) but you can make it move too quickly and flood the engine/turbo with too much fuel and cause slow spool up as you witnessed first hand.

Interesting. I'm going to move my starweel up like you did BILTIT. I have mine almost all the way down right now. Its super easy to do. Thats what I love about these trucks. One more question. I know this is mixing apples and oranges but.... My dad has an 02 HO with the Edge Juice. He runs around on level 5 all the time. I like how quick of a response it is. What can I do to get mine like that?

I think, like BILTIT, raising your starwheel just might give yours the same response as your dad's '02. The gradual increase of fuel from the tighter AFC won't make the turbo lag so much or put out the fire, in other words.

My truck is an absolute monster now with my custom VE and 5x.013 injectors. The AFC is very tight and doesn't reach full fuel until 25psi of boost but it gets there FAST and pulls hard!! And it's burning very clean as I see merely a trace of smoke at barely near full throttle.
