Turn signal flasher question
Turn signal flasher question
I have a problem that when I put my car trailer on the truck flasher the flasher is weak and flashes fast. Do I need a heavy duty flasher or is there some other problem. Was there such a thing as a factory tow package with a brake booster? I have seen a lot of truck picts and all have the same brake booster in the cab. Thanks guys........
Sounds like a resistance problem. If you have a turn signal light out on your truck, does it flash fast? Alot of cars do, some don't flash at all. I don't know about the Dodge, just past experience.
A heavy duty flasher would probably solve that problem, but it will leave you with a bigger problem. First and 2nd gen dodges had a problem with wiring and circuits being too weak. When you hook a trailer to a first gen, every time you turn on the lights all the power is rushing through the light switch. I don't know why Dodge didn't put a few relays in their trucks. I went to the upullit and got a handful of Bosch relays and a holder off a Chevy van and mounted it between the brake booster and the fender on the firewall. I used a separate relay for the taillights, turn signals, and backup lights. The only power going through the light switch to the trailer now is the signal voltage to close the relays. Power to the relays is coming straight off the battery with in-line fuses to protect the wiring. When we got 1st gen Dodges in the Air Force for tow vehicles, we found that every time we hooked tandem trailers the fuses would blow. The Motor Pool got a box that mounted behind the seat, full of relays to solve the problem. When we got the 2nd gens it was even worse. I had 3 trucks catch fire from the hazard flashers before we got the problem corrected. It would be a good mod to install relays on most components in a Dodge.
Get an electronic flasher. They blink at the same rated no matter what you run off them - and they last nearly forever. I've been using the same one in 3 vehicles for over 10 years.
What he said. Every auto parts store sells 'em.
