Turbo upgrade
Got myself a 90 D350 2wd duallie with a non intercooled CTD with an auto behind it. I have a pyro and boost guage for it and have picked up a 3200 spring and kdp tab. I have been looking at the turbo and wondering what to do with it. It has the small inlet and smaller outlet. My first instinct says it is a might restrictive. I am guessing this was an early attempt at faster spool up for the auto trans. Can I upgrade with turbine housing and compressor housing from high tech turbo. Is that worth while or is it better to just pick up a hybrid hx35 from Piers? This is my winter project so I figured i would start researching and gathering parts now. Anybody get much performance out of these turbos?
It wasnt just auto. It was all nonintercooled turbos. There are many upgrades available. HTT doesnt offer their upgrades right now, maybe never again unless were persuausive. If youre not looking for too much, an HX35 is very benefitial. Im running one on my truck with injectors and am very pleased. As you mentioned there is the Piers 35 hybrid. Its a couple steps better than the factory hx35. Take note any upgrade is not a bolt in for these trucks. Of course you need to upgrade the air intake to 4". Also, youll probably want to upgrade your intake horn. I replaced the puny 2" factory one (that at the end necks down to a gawdy 1 1/4" square) with 2.5" tubing. Waht is your goal with this truck?
Hoping to get 350 or so. Have intentions on doing the 4" exhaust, but need to decide on turbo before locating or fabricating a downpipe. I see Stans has a system. Been considering POD's and the bullydog pin. Piers also has an AFE air filter (4") system available fo first Gen trucks. Stuff is hard to find for this vintage. Calls for creativity and fabrication. I think that is what drew me to this project.
you can see what I am running in my sig is about what your plans are. My egts and boost are quite high right now and Id be pushing it to be at 300. With some W/M you maybe able to get there. If you want to do it drugfree, youll probably need some edms and a nice turbo, or you may want to intercool it.
I have the HTT stage lll compressor upgrade, and a 4" intake with an AFE filter, 4" exhaust and H2O/meth,,, Truck does okay,,, 350hp will be toough without melting your engine, If you figure ouot a way without an intercooler, Let us knnow!
An Intercooler would certainly help. That and a set of twins.
Not sure if I want H2O/meth, something about steam expansion and head gaskets. I will research that a little more. This first Gen would look pretty smart with a S300G under the hood, But ouch in my wallet!
I've read here somewhere about someone using a powersmoke intercooler. Don't know if it was a pre 91 truck or not. My rad support looks like it wouldn't support an intercooler very well. Poor access.
Who makes EDM's?

With a little imagination and blood, You can put an intercooler in, It is all up to you, It took me and another good guy to install a power stroke intercooler into an intercooled truck an entire day, And we had most all the parts, Lots of cutting/drilling/welding and fabricating, But we did it all while keeping the ac system.
And in the nin ic trucks, The grill will need to be mostly removed.
H20 meth will clean out all the carbon in your engine, And I blew my HG because the truck had some 300K miles on it when I bought it, And forced 45+ lbs of boost at it,,,, That job actually took less time then the intercooler replacement. Well worth it though!

I just got my Stage III from Steve at Gillett. At the time I got the last one, about two weeks ago. He told me he was going to get more. They are probably in by now.. Give him a call real helpful, nice guy.
You'll definately need more than an HX35 and POD's for 350hp. Save up and spend your money once! Get the turbo and then the sticks, or vice versa. It'd be interesting to see how hard 350hp is to get without an aftercooler of some sort or any drugs. Anyone done this before?
It was a power stroke intercooler installed into a 93 dodge, Many here have done it,
Look in the sticky at how not to install a power stroke intercooler,
Keep in mind, 300 hp and ? tq will pull real good! You will be happy for a while!!!????

Not to hijack, but I keep seeing more and more about Gillett turbo upgrades. Is anyone running one yet? If so, how are they? Their price is quite good, just wondering how they compare to the HTT Stage III/IV. Also, do they bolt on to non-ic trucks, or do they need the fab work like the HTT?
I understand they are both Holset parts. At least the one I got from Gillett came in Holset boxes. I believe they are the same part just through different distributers.
I just put a Stage III in my ic truck. The only problem I had was getting the compressor clamp off. LOL What a pain. I thought I was gonna break the bolt. Anyway it's an easy upgrade.
Can't help ya with a non ic.
