Turbo?!?!?!?!?

Ok well the h1c on my truck broke the other day and i need a new one. THe way im looking at it is why waste my money on something im going to break or have to change soon. The most i will be pulling would be 12.5k give or take a few. And i would never be pulling more than 50-60 miles from my house with no major hills. I am wanting your guys advice on what to get. The most i wanna spend is 1200 and it can be used if in good shape. what do you guys think would work and all my mods are in my sig.

budget

your pretty local, 1200 is a decent budget for a turbo, depends how much your looking to spend down the road, modded hx35's are good past 300 hp, for half that price, you can spend quite a bit just on injectors, some of the bigger turbos take patience to spool, compared to the hx, twins fill in the void, and then more engine upgrades, set a target, for hp, what do you really want?

maybe you can help me. Im ordering POD injectors right now and I would like to do a turbo upgrade soon. I'm aiming for 300-350 HP and would like to do it cheap $300-500. What used turbo from a newer truck should i be looking for?

You're gonna need to spool up quick with the smoke the POD's are gonna make. The Dodgzilla hybrid at City Diesel will get you there and you can adjust your boost pressure with the wastegate.
Be careful, with a lotta power, it can eat yer transmission.

12.5k on a stock converter with 6x.016's and NO afc lever

A 12cm from an HX35 will get you spooled quicker than a 14cm or 16cm. Lots of high HP guys are making huge power with a $$13cm.

how's yer tranny - any upgrades? If not...bud yer gonna need a converter at a minimum. That kind of weight and 300+ hp you'll need either a DTT, Suncoast, or Goerends converter.

But for power, I really like the HX-35/14cm wastegated combo, the ATS manifold, and a real 4" exhaust. Turbo is ~$650, manifold $400, collar $400. You'll really need to get the heat out, but the 14 is not too small as long as your exhaust is big enough to let the heat out. I think a 12 will choke the exhaust side too much especially under heavy towing. I have had terrific results and very managable pyro temps pulling 10k plus up at 7000-9500 feet elevation.

hx mods

reducing the exhaust housing will spool the turbo quicker, with restricted flow, the negative side, this builds more exhaust temperature with more fuel, quick spool x more fuel = power greed. i see some aforementioned upgrades, you cant leave out high tech turbo (htt), in the stickies, the compressor wheel/turbine housing kit will give more volume, there are some very good pictures of the job at hand, after reading the options, search the forums for members with similar mods to get a feel for their satisfaction, the sigs tell all, along with how they use the vehicle.

With your injectors, just get the biggest s300 variant that you can afford. The SS exhaust housing with a bigger turbine wheel would really help spool, but still flow on the top end. The only problem is that then you're looking at a $2k turbo.

anything over 40psi you should start being concerned about the headgasket.

If you have an automatic and plan to tow, you shouldn't get anything with a exhaust housing under 14cm (16cm is the most popular) or you will be fighting to keep the egt's down. With a manual, a 12cm or 14cm would be fine because it will spool faster and you need that because you loose a lot more psi between shifts than an auto. With those 6x16 injectors, I would suggest the 62/71/14 modified S300 on PDR, plus you can w/g it to 35 or 40 psi until you get head work done.

Even if you have a manual tranny, most people that tow really heavy will recommend a 16cm housing. The tranny has nothing to do with how restrictive a housing is.
