truck left me standed for the first time

so I volunteerd for some o.t, at the end of a 10 hour day I jump in my pile and it just cranks, it never "just cranks" it always fires up instantly. So I think, shutdown soleniond, chunk of crap in the fuel filter, or my lift pump just died. Since I don't know how to bypass the solenoid I throw on the spare pump I carry, nothing. bleed the air out and all. try to get the filter off but cant, but figure if I have fuel at the pump it should at least turn over. Its probably that little doodad on the back of the pump. How do I bypass it? Its parked at a spec house my boss is trying to sell, if a realtor pulls up in the morning there going to think some hillbilly is passed out on the property somewhere, I need to at least get the pile started and back to my house. I have voltage, plenty of cranking. What do I need to do?

When that happened to I hot-wired the fuel solenoid and it fired up. I now have it on a relay and switch.

Man, those stupid solenoids are nothing but trouble! I went the cable route and gutted mine. No more problems. Make yourself a jumper wire from the "+" battery post directly to the solenoid, get home, add a cable, and gut that puppy!

thanks gents, that is what I thought, but I wasn't confident enough to start poking a hot wire onto my pump. Just to clarify, its that little thing by the fuel screw with the wire clip on it? What guage wire should I use? NOw I have to go screw with this tommorow instead of the gravy ot my boss was going to give me. Id much rather mess with my truck than make money anyway. Well, again, thanks. Off to work for me now.

I carry a jumper wire with alligator clips on it for this very thing. But that may not be your problem.

You don't need any large gauge wire, the alligator clips would work great for testing

So ofcmarc saved my butt. It seemed to be a bad battery cable that shut down the pile, illustrating how bad my truck needs some electrical upgrades. Marc bled some air out, and she fired up. Less than a mile later, it came to a coasting stop, sucking air in from somewhere. Probally the steller job I did installing the lift pump on friday. So then Marc chain towed me about 15 miles down some chewed up Alaskan roads(I hope your d70 is allright). At least I know whats wrong with it, not the shutoff solenoid, not a starter. Ill sleep easier tonight for sure, thanks Marc, and like I said, if you have some heinous job or are stuck in a ditch at 30 below, let me know.
