Could someone tell me what kind of fluid our transfer case uses?
Thanks,
Cody

Gear oil -- 75w90 to 85w140. I use the thickier stuff to slow down the leaks, but would actually recommend using the thin stuff, or 75w140 synthetic.

If you don't wanna worry about leaks, stay away from the synthetic. Just get a quality 75-90, 80-90 or 80w, 90w gear oil.

Makes a guy wonder why nerely every high performance car mfgr recommends synthetics and/or is the factory fill.. Dodge has synthetics in the NV4500 and rear ends.....Synthetic is simply far superior. If its not leaking now, you'll be fine with synthetics.

Just wait til you add a synthetic . Old seals, fine/tiny leaks, synthetics find ways through. BTDT. Go ahead spend the premium for synthetic, money that could easily been spent on something else on the truck, lord knows we put alot of it in our trucks. But I won't say I told ya so .

Heck if Mopar puts it in their trannys as a factory fill and many of the premium auto cars such as Viper, Porsche etc use it as factory fill. Besides with all the money we put into these trucks arent they worth the best lubrication on the market? I run synthetic in everything I own, there is a difference and its all good.

Yeah all those new cars have new seals and gaskets and such! Not old, just waiting to leak seals LOL. Just be ready to do a front or rear output seal job on your t-case once you switch to synthetic. Some folks and their synthetics .

Now if one was hot shotting or working their truck to max or over max gcvw all the time, then yes get the best you can buy - synthetic. At that you'll need all the protection you can get.

My next question is how many quarts of fluid does the transfer case take? I'm about to go to Ft. Worth and pick up my nv4500 conversion kit from Standard Transmission and was going to buy the fluid also. Cant wait to drive the 1st gen with a nv4500 and southbend FE in it.

My Ram has over a million miles on the transfer case, no leaks, the motor didnt leak, until the 800K. Bought a used Concorde w/ 80k on it, used synthetic at 125K no leaks.

Its like this, if the seal isnt leaking now you'll be fine, if it is, then the synthetics will keep leaking. Synthetics reduce wear, friction and temperature of parts which will extend their life. Not to mention that Dodge considers normal city driving severe duty use. So get some added protection. Even if you had to do a seal, a seal is alot cheaper than rebuilding a transfer case or tranny....

Just fill the case until the fluid comes out the fill hole.

I want to say that you will need to buy two quarts, but have a little left over -- but I might be remembering wrong . . .

So, the Getrag grenaded? Did I miss the update? I thought that the engine had sprung an oil leak

Thanks Bill. Thats the kind of exact answer I was looking for. Fill it till it comes out of the fill hole really doesnt cut it when you have to buy the fluid in advance.

Alec- I think you might have me mixed up with someone else. Luckily, my engine has never leaked any oil, but my tranny took a crap on me coming home from Dallas last weekend, and I will be installing a nv4500 in the truck in the morning along with a southbend FE. Cant hardly wait to have a decent tranny and clutch behind the engine...

Transfer Case Fluid! Gear oil or ATF +4 9602

After reading various posts, I'm somewhat confused. Some say use 95w/140 or some good quality diff. oil for the transfer case. Others say use Mopar ATF +4 9602 fluid in the transfer case.

Will using gear oil lubricate the gears better? What is the difference? I must be missing something.

All comments are welcome. Thanks!

the np241 found in 1994 and on uses atf and the np205 uses gear oil.
