MoparTyson, the A518 that's in the diesels (actually, all of them) is a 727 with a OD housing bolted up. To get a A518 to run good, get a shift kit, adjust the bands (there is a link here to do it), and put in a good torque converter. That is all that's needed to make a good A518.
Maybe your Dakota had a A999? Did the Dakota have a lock-up converter?

I finally bought a brand new trans (not rebuilt) from chrysler and broke it too!!!!! So I'm a lil gunshy of the 518

To answer your final drive question...70MPH
Going from Worst to best...only a few options from MANY
with a 727 3spd(1:1), 4.11 gears and 37" tires your rpms at 70 will be roughly 2760(depending on slippage).
With a getrag(.77OD) you should be at 2012 depending on tire wear....
with a 47RE(.69OD) your looking at 1803 RPMs which would give you the best mileage... and being an automatic its good from what i've read about it...

I don't think I'm runnin that high of rpm now with the gas burner and the 727.
I'll put a tach in it tomorow and see where I'm at. Don't want to change gears in th diffs
Truck only has 66,000 miles on it and the ring and pinions look great! Think I need a 518
Anyone near AR got one???????

They are 4.10. I pulled my gear chart and with tire diameter and gear ratio with 1:1 (3rd in 727) it puts it at 2500 rpm
But those charts are lose figures. You have to keep in mind slippage actual tire diameter and lock up converters will
Drop rpm. Very little

Yes there are several... and they all produce relatively the same results. My favorite one is the first one google comes up with... search for "gear ratio calculator" It has the most information possible... PLUS you can do two different ones at once and see the pros and cons of two different setups.
Did you hook a tach up today? what did it read?

No didn't get a chance to. Gotta pull the tach out of my race truck. Thanks for the info on the calculator.
I'll get on there and play with some gears. This truck is my toy to pull my other toys around with so I want it
to be comfortable at 70-75
