Tranny cooler

Who on here has eliminated the factory tranny cooler for an after market cooler with a fan to cool it? The reason I ask is I recently rulled a FeDex truck out of a 3/4 mile black dirt/clay road, and the only way I could get to him was to drive to his rear and pull him 1/2 mile in reverse. I could not turn around, and I couldnt get around him to pull him straight. Well My tranny got close to 195 degrees. I stopped and let it sit and cool down to 150ish before finishing yankin the bone head out.

I was thinking of re routing a cooler with a small electric fan, and either mount it in the radiator support, or in front of the intercooler. I have yet to understand why they use engine coolant to cool tranny fluid as the engine coolant is at thermostat temp of 195.

When I was automatic, I had some not sure what they were but they were 2 great big coolers mounted in front of the grill. That trans puked and I didn't want to re use them so I got a RV trans oil cooler from Napa, substantially smaller than the others, and put it up front. Trans ran a lot cooler, but that was also due to it being a 47RH that I ran locked up pretty like a manual to keep the slippage and resulting heat down. When I intercooled my truck I bolted it on to one of the studs on the 2nd gen intercooler. Worked fine to the day that the automatic went away for a NV5600.

I still run my factory tranny cooler, but I installed a "Flex-a-lite" cooler to aid in cooling things down.

Up here I can't run the flexalite in the winter as my tranny will never warm up even with the fan not running.

So I just close that circuit and go back to stock.

I can't say enough good things about this product. I would have payed triple to get the performance it delivers.

The one my dad put on mine last spring has 3/8 inch inlets. Once I finally find one with full-length 1/2 inch tubing I am going to T this one in to run two in the summer.

Looked at some NAPA had on the shelf yesterday. They had 1/2 inch lines, but the ends were swaged down to 3/8. DUH!

I got a B&M cooler I believe with a fan and temp sensor that will kick the fan on with a relay when it hits 175*. Right now I just have the fan on a switch and watch my gauge, I've been too lazy to put the relay in. I got this fan on a trade and installed it on an angle under the battery tray with the fan on the backside sucking air through. I cut a big chunk out in front of it and it gets a little air from under the grille. It is at least twice if not three times the size of the stock trans cooler. I went this route since I installed a powerstroke intercooler and the stock one wouldn't fit and this one wouldn't fit anywhere else up front with the new intercooler. I may put it somewhere else one of these days but I haven't seen over 190* when pulling a load up a hill. I am planning on getting rid of the trans heater/cooler under the manifold when i put the twins in plus since it gets your tranny hot if your coolant is hot.

So what do you guys consider deadly tranny temps? Ive been told 220 and up. Ive never had a gague before this truck, so In all my Gas engine trucks I have relied on the factory temp light. Never been an issue before, this truck is getting a rebuilt tranny as soon as I get thisgs rounded up, and Im gonna buy a cooling pan also.
