Trading Civic for 92 Cummins, What to look for?
Hey everyone, my cousin has a decent 97 civic, and another guy approached him about flat out trading for his car after seeing his ad.
The truck is regular cab long bed, with around 200,000 miles.
5-speed, 150 horse injectors, rebuilt turbo. NO gauges....
Also the guy told my cousin he had a bigger fuel pump, and it wasn't turned up only was more powerful. --I know about turning the "smoke screw" but didn't think that there were bigger pumps available.
Problems with the truck are
-oil leak from rear main seal(have access to a lift to fix)
-shakes at 65(needs aligned??
-If it has a dowel pin, it hasn't been tabbed
Is there anything else that he should look for in the truck????
Also would the 150 injectors be running too hot for the truck??
Any info is appreciated, since I am not knowledgable on the 1st gens.

trade him and drive as fast away as possible before he changes his mind! i would take a 1st gen over a civic any day, get gauges right away! or heck tell the guy you'll only trade if he throws in 300 dollars so u can get some gauges

If it runs take it.
If its a 4x4 the front axle is worth more than an 11 year old civic. Hell the core on the motor is worth more too.
If the guy giving it to you is talking about shakes, it is probably either tires need some balance, or most likely the kingpins need a rebuild on the dana 60(if its a 4x4). ... not very expensive, but time consuming.

Yes the truck is 4x4!!!
My thouhgts too on the trade.haha
Still wondering if the injectors would get too hot?????
Since I know my cousin might forget to drive sensibly on his first few fill-ups, or untill he runs of out fuel money.

rust...i would assume they use salt out there in ohio. check the floor boards and the roof. make sure it does not have roof root or it would/will be a pain to fix.

As long as he doesn't hook a trailer on the back he'll probably be fine. The current owner doesn't sound too bright and he hasn't toasted it yet.

Well guys, sadly/surprisingly he decided not to trade.
1) He knows that us young drivers tend to be hard on on vehicles, and i was really concerned that the other kid didn't have any gauges to even know if he was running it too hard.(Especially when he told my cousin he had to sell his last car due too many tickets!!)
2) I think it finally clicked he wouldn't be able to drive 50 miles a day for no reason.haha
3) He wants to get a truck closer to mine so he can take my small upgrades as i build it up.haha
He thought i would be madd, but I told him i wasn't and had to work harder to convert him to a diesel head like everyone else on here.haha
