Trade the '93 Dodge for a '94 Chev?????

Ok what should I do? I have a 93 4x4 LE reg cab, Auto. 165000kms.
2 kids and a wife mean we all can't travel together in the rig but we have dealt with it so far.
I have a chance to trade for a 94 chev crew cab 4x4 5 speed
with no options what so ever. Do you guys pick the trucks based on motor or based on truck. I've never owned a 6.5 turbo but I've heard some of the nightmares. I am not looking to hear Chev or Dodge bashing here I know both have their good points.
I'm just really in a situation where I don't know what to do.
I like the Dodge for the engine and it looks and sounds like a man's truck. The chev will drive and be convenient.

Flip a coin?

If I was in the position, I would make the trade, based upon the thought that the family can travel together. yeah it is a great motor, but they have made a million of them so far, and more come out every day. Heck the newer trucks are more 'family friendly' any way. you could slide into one of them at a later date if need be.

Just make sure you are getting a good looking chevy. I havent really heard much about making those fast, so you better look decent in it. Its really a personal thing. Your gonna be driving a chevy, how picky are you on brands? What kind of shape is it in, like I mentioned before. And do you like the truck? I mean, although you can haul the whole family in it, i personally wouldnt buy it unless I liked it, so put that into consideration too.

Re:Trade the '93 Dodge for a '94 Chev?????

First off the only reason I bought my truck is the Cummins. Dodge, GM, Ford really does not matter to me. If you like the Chevy it would do a nice job getting the family around. I do not think you will like how it tows vs the Cummins. Where I work we have a 94 reg cab dually with a 6.5. It is a very nice truck drives fine, but is a dog towing. For me it would be hard to give up the Cummins. I would want to find a four door truck to put the Cummins into.

Good luck in whatever you do.

Re:Trade the '93 Dodge for a '94 Chev?????

I am a Chevy fan, worked for them for many years and I think they have the best looks and ride, a great transmission and the 6.5 is a good engine. I think 94 or was it 93 was the first year with electronics on the injection and they had some problems with it. Also they are hard to keep cool when working hard. You might want to join this forum http://www.62-65-dieselpage.com/ they have some smart guys there, the only problem is their forum went down awhile ago and they lost most of their archives. I have a 6.2 in my van and have had no problems with it. I have to say the cummins is 5 times the engine and sounds a lot better too.

The fact that they're willing to trade a crew cab for an older Cummins aughta tell you something.

I was in your shoes years ago, I opted for a sleeper that went down into the bed, bolted in, rear door and a bolted down bench with seat belts,as the kids got older in thru the back door, when they were little ,crawl thru the cab, what ever is convienent to you. Rick

Re:Trade the '93 Dodge for a '94 Chev?????

If you just want a big pickup with good fuel economy, the Chevy will do fine. If you're towing anything heavy (say over 4000 pounds), don't do it. The 6.5 liter GM is a pathetic excuse for a turbo diesel, but it will do OK for light loads. My pastor has a diesel Suburban (5 kids), he loves the fuel economy and it's enough to tow his pop-up camper.

Re:Trade the '93 Dodge for a '94 Chev?????

Thanks for the advice. Wannadiesel hit the nail on the head. Other than loads of fire wood I don't haul anything and rarely even a trailer. Mainly I want a big vehicle that will not kill me at the pumps. Thanks again and I'll post what I end up doing.

Here's another option, a ready-made '91 Dodge D350 Cummins crewcab
'91 Dodge D350 Cummins
for only $6500.

Good luck.

Nice truck, but I need foour wheel drive or else the truck will be stuck at the bottom of my driveway for the duration of the winter. Very nice look to that truck though.

Are you trading straight up for the chevy or do they want you to pay anything at all? How many miles are on the chevy. My friend blew up his first 6.5 at 90,000 miles.

Re:Trade the '93 Dodge for a '94 Chev?????

I been around 6.2's and 6.5's for a long time, they are an o.k. motor but no power what so ever. Fuel pumps and injectors are expensive and mine ate them for lunch and dinner. Good fuel eco, mine was about 22-25 mpg. My uncle got an 02 reg cab CTD then lifted it, he's got three kids and a wife. He said he did it to keep his wife and kids out of the truck, just enough room for him and the dog , that man is my hero. I'd keep the CTD and up grade to a cab and a half or quad, the investment is worth it the resale value is much higher on a quad dodge vs. crew chevy. Thats my 2 cents.
