TQ Q's

I will be dropping my '92 cummins/auto into my ramcharger in the next few weeks. How stupid would it be to just toss it in there without replacing the torque converter, or without at least knowing what it is? I am tempted to just stuff it in without ever taking the tranny off the engine. If I did take it apart, is there any way to tell if it if original with 160,000 miles on it or if it is a quality replacement? I know no historyon it, nor do I have access. Since automatic trannys work on magic, I don't even know what to look for.

if the fluid smells fine not burnt i would think it would be fine. but a shift kit would be good to install with a good trans cooler, that way if its stock it will live longer.

Do you have $500-1000.00 to replace it is my question? If you do, you cannot go wrong swapping it out, you should at the very least look at it and see whats there. The TCI low end unit it $400.00 in todays new Summit catalog, which by the way I was happy with compared to OEM, but if I had more money at the time I would have spent more. I was expecting a more significant change in how the thing reacted, it is better though. Like I said, you better at least look, there might be a tell-tale-sign, billet cover etc. You never know.

i just bought a hughes 15XFM for $309 and no core charge thru pace performance, i read a few great reviews on it from a few owners who have installed it, of course others consider hughes to be on the "cheaper" end quality wise...strangely enough, im in phoenix and so is hughes, i called them and they quoted me around $750 exchange for the same converter...amazing what online shopping can do...
i regreted not changing my factory converter when i rebuilt my tranny...i will install the hughes unit this week end.

The sales staff at hughes are ?able to say the least. I talked to bob in the shop and he quoted me a 92% converter with a 1100rpm stall and additional fins for 370. That was all building my converter. You can get your moneies worth but you have to shop hard. I'd bet they quoted you a lock up.

Thanks for the info so far. I will take a look at it. Maybe it will disclose some info. I am throwing so much money at the crewcab that I don't have anything to spar. Just want to get the rc on the road and start playing with it by summer.
