TPS question after reading tech article

sorry to be such a boob, but I tried to follow the directions on the TPS check tech article, and got confused.

when putting the safety pin in to connect to the "+", that's into the plug? after disconnecting it from the little black box (the TPS)?

when I put it there, and turned on the key, it jumped to a solid 2.6, and didn''t move when I moved the pedal... at all.

I took the TPS (the little black box) off, cleaned off what I could (it seemed fine) and put it back together. something doesn't make sense though... if I'm checking the wire, and disconnecting it to do so, nothing changed in the wire after cleaning the thing... I must not understand.

You have to stick the paperclip in the back of the connector while it's still connected to the tps. Stick the paperclip in right where the middle wire goes into the connector and push it until you get a good connection.

so, jam it in there, and keep the 3 prong plug connected?? wow. ok.

I was reading the great stuff that WannaDiesel put up at the top of the 1st gen page.. the 'sticky' articles. if you go about halfway down, you see the ones about TPS. good stuff, I'm just too simple to figure a lot of it out.
