Torque converters

I am looking for the best TC I can get for under $400. I am on a budget and can't afford much more than that because I have got to take in to consideration the labor to put it in. I have been looking at the Hughes, TCI, and Mojave Green TC's. I would like to know what you guys think about these companies and how good thier products are. And also if there is other brands that I should look at.

People like the Hughes. It's what I'll get when I take the plunge. The Hughes XFM is a super low stall. Will increase fuel mileage considerably.

Will a 727 torque converter work with an A518?

The Hughes 24XFM is a 727 torqueflight torque converter, right? It was recommended to me, but will it work with an A518? I am in the same dilemma as you are, smokin92. I want to do something about my tranny, but I am on a very limited budget.

I just had my tranny completely overhauled plus upgrades, shift kit and low stall TC 10 days ago MAJOR improvment in hook up, milage ,etc . TC and 3rd gear extra clutch pack ,levels ,bands, struts etc from TCS [torque convertor specialities] . Model for me was 618-2 [never mind the code numbers it is a hd lowstall non lock-up for the 727/518]. They have a great web site .Price thru tranny shop was $544 CdN or about $432 US. Now I know it's not a DTT or a BD , BUT my truck is not 500 hp built for sled pulling either !!!!

non lockup converter

I just ordered a Hughes 15XFM for my truck.I questioned them up and down as I saw the 24XFM listed for our trucks.I told them it was a 518 non lockup and they said the 15XFM is the one I need so we will see if I get the right one.

Please let us know as I'm going to have to take the plunge real soon.

Check this out:

http://www.hughesperformance.com/jobber.pdf Chrysler trannys are around page 30

It lists the 15LXFM, but no 15XFM. The listed 15LXFM is much more expensive than the 24XFM, since it is a lockup unit. I'm confused . They must have a non-lockup 15XFM or something, but they are not listing it. I might give them a call and see what the deal is. Could I ask what the 15XFM set you back, charger 69?

Also, does the A518 have a 23 or 24 spline input shaft?

I talked with Matt at Hughes today.
The converter for our trucks is the 15XFM, the cost is @$299 +shipping to Phonix, however; he said that they currently have no cores, so I would have to send him my converter to be rebuilt. He said right now the shops turn around time is 2-3 days.
Thier number is 602-257-9591

Yes I'm going to go with the one from cummins- from a second gen. I know I dream big, but my pocket will not alow me to get over 300rwhp any time soon so I think I'm safe with a second gen.

Kennedy- Thanks for the info, I'm going to have to look into this VERY soon, I can't go over 20psi boost or I slip like

Thanks for the info! Looks like a 15XFM is cheaper than a 24, anyway.

Mine is the 15XFM it will hold good enough to rip the flexplate as I just got through replacing mine. I went back with the same second gen flexplate I had. Mainly because of the $$$ situation and needing to keep it on the road. I believe I paid right around the same $299 for my converter too. Good choice especially if $$ are a concern.

MJDiesel, the guy I talked to at Hughes was (Junior)
It was $358.79 plus shipping and it isn't listed on their site as I told them what my truck is and he went to talk to somebody, when he came back he said it was a 15XFM I wanted and not the 24XFM.
Mudcat, after seeing you had a flexplate problem with a 2nd gen plate, I wonder if Dodge sold you the right one.I went to order mine from Dodge today and they wanted the trucks VIN.so I told him that I wanted a 2nd gen plate and he said what I needed was the part that was on the screen so I don't know if it was a 2nd gen plate or not as the price was like $279. Does that sound right? I hate to spend the extra for a PDR plate but I'd hate to do this twice also.

Thanks, charger, I might be ordering one soon. I think that I am just going to get the flywheel at a junk yard or something.
