Question Top Ten Reasons To Think I broke An Engine Mount . . .

No. 10 ~ From a stand still in 4 wheel drive, building ten pounds boost while holding the brake, then flooring it while releasing the brake has the truck jump out of gear when (I think) it shifts to second gear. It literally jumps into neutral. I can pull the shift lever back into drive and all is well.

No. 9 ~ Sitting still and watching the engine as I power-brake, building up to ten pounds boost presents with the engine torquing over toward the passenger's side about a full inch. It most likely moves a bit more going to full throttle if not but briefly.

No. 8 ~ The drivers mount appears OK but the passenger's side has what appears to be a plug of rubber seemingly out of place (front side toward the radiator). The rubber generally appears in good shape with no swelling or visible cracks and such.

No. 7 . . . . (You fill in the blank) . .. .

(A518 Automatic).

Material missing from one side of the fan shroud.

Unusual vibration while driving on a smooth road.

Visual inspection while jacking up on piece of wood under the oil pan reveals daylight between the rubber and metal?

The old Chevy V-8's had a motor mount problem. You could almost make the engine jump out of the engine bay. Then they came out with a better mount and stopped all the fun. On my 58 it wouldn't go into neutral but the stick on the column would lift up in the air. That's how I knew it was time for a new motor mount.

I've a couple of the OEM mounts coming in Thursday and plan on installing them this weekend.

On the note of the fan shroud, mine like most here came apart years ago. I've since fabricated a new one from sheet aluminum stock I got from the local scrap yard. As such, I've got about a full inch or so of space between the outer edge of the fan and the shroud all the way around. No swapping paint there.

While it's for the cross-flow radiator, if y'all want I'll see if I can pull it out and take measurements such that we could come up with some templates.

As always folks, your input and suggestions are valued and welcome.

David
