Timing with the indicator
Timing with the indicator
Is there somewhere on the web that has the procedure to check/setup your timing with a dial indicator. I'm
sure the service manual has this info but I have yet to buy one.

If you are talking about using indicator in rear of pump it is supposed to be 1.25 mm but you have to put #1 cly at tdc with pin in then put indicator on end of pump with fitting pull pin out and rotate engine 360 degree (indicator should be able to go at least 2mm) this is from manual. If you want I could scan pages and email?
That's what I'm talking about...I was looking at this kit

I think I remember reading the 8mm adapter was the one we need.
Last question, where on the back of the pump does it go?

I bought a dial indicator from the guy on ebay with the VW stuff. I found it easier to remove #1 injector line, and the fuel filter to get easy access to it.
Find #1 TDC (dont depend on the timing pin). Turn engine back about 30-45deg. Hook up dial indicator. Turn engine to TDC, and take reading from indicator. Move pump as needed to get desired timing. Move engine back to -30/45deg and double check reading. I double check after every movement of the pump. I also allow myslelf .1-.2mm error.
