Throwout bearing?
Throwout bearing?
Had a new noise start yesterday. When releasing the clutch, I get a deep whirring/whining noise from the transmission area. Not all the time, but about half the time. Shifting is OK. Also, it seems to be noisier when coasting - sort of ticking. After searching the threads, it seems that the throwout bearing may be the culprit. This is what I suspected but I would like the opinion of some of you guys with expirience in the area. What do you think?
How much time does it take to replace? I have not done this before but I have the factory service manual and it seems pretty straight foreward.
Any tricks or special tools?
For clarification, truck is a 93 W250 with an NV4500.
Thanks.

If it stop when you apply slight pressure to the peddle then that's your prob but if you have to fully depress the clutch then it may be in your trans. usually the throwout bearing. Just drop the trans and it slips right on. takes a few hours to do a 30second fix.
Thanks. Noise is gone as soon as the pedal is released. Anything I need to know to drop the T-case and tranny or is it as straight foreward as the manual says?
Does the clutch have to be removed? It doesn't seem like it does.

That happened to me, a terrible noise if you ask me. I went to get the clutch removed and the throwout bearing was so bad that when I went to turn it by hand I couldn't. But my original sachs clutch still had 50% life lest after 150K of towing.
