Thoughts on custom rear bumper

I was hunting around here looking tor something to make a rear bumper out of
This is what I came up with. a piece of 4"x6" 42" long 1/4" wall tube for the span between the frame rails This section would have a couple cutouts in the back to lighten it a little and provide access for the receiver hitch pin.
For each side I have a piece of 4"X6" 3/16 wall tube that I am thinking of cutting into a channel and tapering forwards at the ends.

Does this sound too heavy?

I like njtman's bumper. Keeps the stock-ish lines but rugged and custom looking zt the same time.

As far as "too heavy", any added weight to the rear of the truck is welcome in my eyes

End detail. I am not sure I am going to build it this way just thinking.

The bumper on my truck, which is still there consists of a piece of 6 inch channel iron. I backed into a telephone pole once with no damage other a jarring stop. I pity to poor rice burner that rear-ends me.

you could weld the ends up and weld walls on the inside then weld doors on top on or side for storage. Only bad thing is if you put the doors on the top is that the tailgate has to be up to get in. 4"X6"x16" will hold quite a bit of stuff chains hitch pins a crescent wrench or 2 it's not going to be water tight so you would need to put some drain holes in. I just about decided to start over and design one that I liked better when my Narcissistic father came out and started his " your not smart enough to do that" routine. So I decided I can make it work to my satisfaction. LOL It's cheaper this way anyway.

We put one on my cousin's 3/4 ton square body Chevy that was made out of 4x6x.25 tube with custom made ends. No holes to lighten it due to salt roads and corrosion probs. We cut out and boxed in an area for the license plate and mounted some LED back up lights in the bumper. Weight made the truck ride better! I'll send you some pics when I get the chance to take some.

I like Kensmachine's idea of adding storage compartments.
