no headlights - need help ASAP

I went to take of tonight and my headlights won't come on. All the other lights including the trailer lights are working like they should. When I flick the high beams on the headlights will come on as long as I hold it in but they won't stay on. I'm stuck in the mild of know where and need some help.

Could very well be a headlight switch or a bad ground/bare wire somewhere.

if both headlights come on at all when you hold the hi beam switch then you know the bulbs are good and connectors at headlights are good.

try to unhook the trailer lights completely and see if the headlights come on then. trailer lights could of overriden something and popped a fuse or something

You're describing exactly what happened with my truck when my headlight switch went out.

I already unplugged the trailer and it did nothing and I know both headlights should be good cause I replaced both of them last night. I was thinking it was the switch. Thanks for the help guys.

If the bulbs are good and you have to have light, take a length of wire and tie it in at one of the prongs on the back of the bulb.

Make absolutely certain that this is NOT the GROUND terminal.

Connect the other end to Battery=HOT.

Both headlamps should come ON and remain ON until you disconnect the wire.

I have driven big trucks plumb across the nation wired just so; a little rustic, but it will get the job done.

It's the multi function switch on the column not the headlight switch on the dash. The fact that you can get high beams is the indicator. My headlight switch went out last week. I had running lights, but that was it. No high or low. A few years back, I had exactly what you described and it was the multifunction switch.

Now would be a real good time to install a no-nonsense genuine ON THE FLOOR dimmer-switch.

Installation is so simple that a 3-year-old could do it and you can custom position it to suit yourself.

The ONLY reason all that stuff is on the column is so that Chrysler can have some little minimum-wage non-union factory in Kentucky assemble the column and all the robots at the union assembly-line have to do is plug in the harness.

It's either the light switch of the multi-funciton switch. The reason I think its the light switch is because its also effecting the interior lights. I've figured out that if the interior lights work the headlights wont and if the headlights come on and stay on the interior lights dont work. With the multifunction switch my blinkers dont work.

My headlights will sometimes (usually) go off while I am driving, I replaced the switch and they still did this.

I'd say you've got a bad ground somewhere then.

I've replaced the headlight switch a year ago now every so often my headlights will blink on and off until I shut all lights off and turn them back on. Then they will stay on for a long while. Acts like there is a circuit breaker in the new headlight switch.

Similar problem

Both of my headlights went out. Is there a relay or fuse for the headlights? Running lights still work. High/Low beam has no effect.

My first step would be to take apart the multifunction switch and clean it. I had a similar problem some 9-odd years ago; see this old thread:

Good luck.

Try Jim Lane's head light harness upgrade. The heat generated by the undersized stock harness creates problems in the switch and elsewhere.

How'd you get the switch out?
