Tell me if this makes sense or not...

So, moving the top of the pump toward the head advances timing. I might be backwards on this, but looking at the front of the motor, taking the gear off the pump and rotating it one tooth to the right should advance the timing, right? I tried this last night (my pump was all the way advanced, i.e. no room to go on the slots but the stock timing marks matched up) and it idles slower, and smokes like a volcano...blueish whitish smoke...it's real quiet too...I'm gonna go out and move it one tooth the other way and see what happens...doesn't make sense to me, but I'm prolly messed some in one way or another, thanks,

Brian

That does seem counter-intuitive...have to pull out the manual.

Don't have a manual, but I did get it turned one tooth the other side of where it used to be, and it sounds like a normal diesel again, but I messed up the crank seal last night, so gotta pick up a new one tomorrow. Right now I'm just kinda confused about the whole thing. Guess I'm gonna have to find tdc, pull off the #1 injector line and measure the travel of the plunger. Seems like it's gonna be a p.i.t.a., but might as well take my time and do it right I suppose. Been reading a zillion threads on it, think I've got a clue, but any tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks,

Brian

when you find tdc, pull the bolt in the center of the injection line cluster. that is where the plunger is on our pumps.

what's your email? i've got something that might help.
