Well I was welding up some parts for my CJ-7 and looked over at my truck. Hummm whats that thing hanging under the truck? OH CRAP.
Well I'm gonna fab up a new one tommorro night. Is there any thing else I should check at the top of the tank since its hanging 8" too low?

Yea I know the seal is leaking, right now that is the least of my concern. The tank is only 1/4 full. When it broke I have know Idea. SCARY. I also am wondering what the thing is under the drivers floor. Looks to be something for fuel like some sort of valve. Some of the rubber lines are plugged with a bolt, by the PO. I looked in the FSM and can't find what it is. What lines are on our trucks.
1. Fuel to motor
2. Fuel return to tank.
Am I missing something?

About 10 years ago one of the guys at work was driving home and all of a sudden he hears a thump. About 1/4 mile later the truck dies. He called me on the phone to tell me the truck is dead on the side of the road. About that time a guy pulls up next to him and said "your problem is back on the side of the road". Both straps had broken and the fuel tank fell right out. I replaced the straps on that truck several times, and finally made my own out of some 1/4 X 2" strap.
my back strap broke well actually the strap is fine just the slot that it goes in rusted out.......so i took pipe hangers i bought a coil of this stuff and wrapped it around the tank and frame about 25 ft of that stuff doesn't look good but hey it works

last summer i was offroading and i heard a good bang, so i get out walk around and i see nothing wrong so i keep on going into the bush and im hearing this rubbing noice, and my fuel light came on and i was stating to smell fuel, long story short 20 miles away from home, 5mile away from nerest road and 4am in the morrning (yes i slept out in the bush) i finaly able to get the truck moving again, took a chain and bolted to the frame and to the cross menber still there and it saftied twice like that, oh and first real fight witha blond, good times, lol
My rear strap broke Saturday. I was about 75 miles from home at a plowing get-to-gether and getting ready to come home when some guy told me he noticed it. I picked up a front and rear today from the $$$ dealer $$$. 75.50for one 82.35 for the other. For that kind of money I thought they might be stainless but nope.
Seeing as how you have very little fuel in there, and the work is already half done, I would go ahead and completely drop the tank and inspect the brittle plastic fittings at the top of the tank.
I would also replace both the rubber return and draw lines at the tank; they are probably the originals and plenty rotten.
When the rear strap gave way on one of my trucks, it also snapped off the return-line.
Also, unless you are in love with the truck-bed, while the tank was safely out of the way, I would cut an access hole in the bed-floor, such that I could easily access the fuel-unit at the tank's top.
You can make a neat trap-door for the hole, or just screw a plate over the hole.
As for those extra plugged lines, it is possible that a previous owner had an extra tank and those are the lines for it; is there a tank-switching valve anywhere in the floor-board, most likely on the driver-side, under or behind the seat ??
Thanks guys. I'm gonna make my own straps up. For about 5-10 bucks. I'm cheap. I will try and take some pics of the gizmo under the floor. I will also inspect the lines at the tank.
