Tach Install

Anyone ever wired an Autometer tach into the factory harness? I ordered a 2687 Z-series to go in the 2nd Gen colum mount and figured I could just snag the tach signal from the pcm. That might just be too easy though.

I know Isspro has a wiring harness for the their tach to work in the factory plug in. I don't know about autometer, in my opinion Isspros are nicer.

Where exactly is the factory wire harness. Ive looked under my dash and I cant seem to find it among my smorgasboard of wires, fuses, and plugs. Plus Im 6'3"....its hard to get into a position to look under there without almost breaking my back...I dont bend that way!

I am 6 3 also
I took off ther panel with the fuse bluck behind it, under the steering colum,
Then it was right there, sticking out of one of the wire harnesses, just look to the left a little.

Ok. I took a qick look. It was kinda dark but I found a 4-prong plug that was black and blue on the left side...that it? I also found a 6-prong plug on the right? What is that for?

I found mine tapped up with other wires, it has a flat connector with four wires; two were black, one was orange, and one gray with bluish stripe. I hooked it up to an elcheapo tach set for a 4-cylinder, I already had it and it worked. it may not be accurate but it is steady and gives me an idea of whats happening.

Seems to me I read a post awhile back that made reference toa 2 pulse tach lead in that plug that would alow an aftermarket tach to work. Can't find the post again though.

Taterfarm, What wire did you tie into. It's probly the one I need.

Thanks

Marc

yeah, the clip was black, it was with the bunch of wires on the left going to the firewall. From the tach to the harness I went green to grey w/blue stripe, white to orange, black to the - black, and the red to the + black. With a test light, a few minutes, and trial and error it all hooked up. The best part is the power for the light is already hooked to the dimmer and dims with the dash lights.

Ok, last dumb question and this should solve all my problems. I was planning on getting an Isspro Tach along with the Isspro wire harness for the Dodge CTD, but, the picture of the wire harness looks just like a bunch of wires with no kind of fuses or regulators or anything like that. Could I just save myself $40+ bucks and buy wires and make the harness myself?

Here is that wire harness...

Also, what tach would ya'll recommend?

Ok, so I got the Tach installed (autometer z-series 2&1/16 in a colum '94-'97cover mount) and it looks like it grew there . (sorry, no digital camera for a pic) Only problem is it dosent work properly . Set the Tach to the 4 cyl setting(2 pulse) and it seems like it reads about 1/2 speed. Can anyone verify that the tach wire in the factory harness is a 2 pulse per rev?

Thanks

i was watching this link for a solution before i went a head and did mine, sounds like there are some issues with the after market tacks working at like half the rpm

That is exactly my problem. I wonder if the tach signal gets buffered by the pcm so the signal might be too weak for the tach to use. Any thoughts? Anyone?

i pmed 4RnrRick a week ago to see if he found a solution to this problem. his was a auto meter gauge wondering if other tacks have same problem? no reply from 4RnrRick as of yet but maybe some one else has delt with this issue, and knows of a fix or a tack part number for one that does work
