t-case interchange
Re:t-case interchange
Hey -- just 'cause I would never use an auto tranny in a swap . . .
I know it bolts up to the NV4500 & 5600 without too much trouble . . . I think you just have to shorten the splined coupler a tad on the transmission side, but everything bolts right up. One might think the auto trannies use the same bolt pattern, but I don't know at all about output shaft splines, and I bet you knew all of this already . . .
What are you working on?

Re:t-case interchange
well, I wouldn't use an auto either :P but mom doesn't drive a stick, and wants an auto for haulin horses anyway.
we've got a 83 crew duallie in pretty nice shape, with a 440/727/GV OD. It gets about 8mpg. Dad recently bought a very beat up 91.5 W250 5speed. We're throwing around the idea of using the cummins/front axle/tcase in the duallie, and buying a 47rh or something to put in.

Re:t-case interchange
The GV is nice, but the OD ratio on it is .78, most OEM OD ratios are more like .69. The truck really wants less gear, I think for that 440, a 3.54 or 3.73 with the OD would be a nice comprimise. As it is, you never have to shift out of OD to go up hills loaded, but when you're out on the road running 75mph or so, you're still cranking 2800rpm. It'd be nice to cruise around 2400-2500 at 75 with that setup, then kickdown out of OD up the bigger hills.
Re:t-case interchange
So -- you would have to do a rear axle R&P swap as well for the conversion . . . The front axle swap would be a basic bolt-in though? And no-one has answered your transmission questions. What is the 4spd OD auto that the 91-93's had with the NP205 transfercase? And why not use that -- don't the later autos use the newer flywheel housing anyway? On the other hand, I did see some pictures of an allison to NP205 adapter somehwere . . .
Just yackin -- it has been too long since I have had time to do an engine swap . . .

well, the lack of a quality lockup convertor for the 518/618 auto is the main reason I'd prefer to go with a 47rh. It may be that there's no easy way to make one work with a NP205 tho, that's what I'm trying to find out.
And yes, we'd do a R&P change from the donor truck, I'm assuming that the D70 in the duallie has the same center as the D70 in the donor, that's something I'm not sure on either.
The plan for the front would be to cut the frame and cab apart at roughly the a pillar on both trucks, and then just reattach the w250 front to the duallie. That way we get the front axle, clutch, dash, etc, all in one shot.

Im interested in the swap but as I said earlier im not "all" knowledgable on the Dodges but the auto in my 90model wouldnt do you any good would it? If I understand right its a 3-speed and those were low geared so thats why it has 3.07 gears. I havnt got many answers to my questions either. Still dont know if the transfer of the 90 auto will mate up to my 92 5-speed getrag. I assume it will with the right components. I see asilitch posted that 91-93 have a NP205,so what does the earlier models have?
