Strange Things are Happening..
Hey Guys,
OK,it did that "missing" thing on me again after a short romp on it (romped halfway down the block, about a block from my house)...pulled into my driveway and it was missing again.
I sat in my driveway with it missing for about a minute, lightly touching the throttle to see if that would help with no change...
So then I stabbed the pedal to rev it a little hoping it would clear it out...instead of clearing-out, it turned into a runaway (AHHHH!!)!
Luckily it shut-off when I hit the key...
Sat for a second (WHOA!), then I started it back-up to see if it was still a runaway...
Lo and behold, it was idleing normally, running on all cyl's again(WTH?)...
Any idea's?
Seems to me if the reason for the miss was fuel starvation, it would stop missing soon after coming back to idle...
And WTH was the runaway thang all about?
On another note...
How common is it to have to wait for the trans to pump-up after starting sometimes?
It doesn't do it every time, but...
I'll put it in gear and nothing happens...then I switch back and forth between drive and reverse a few times and you can feel it coming back more and more...it only takes a couple seconds to pump-up.
Other than that, the trans seems fine. Bangs into gear, shifts out fine,OD works great...
Thanks for any help or idea's in advance...

The tranny thing is normal---dodges don't circulate the fluid in park, but they do in neutral. Try starting it and putting it in neutral for a foew seconds--then it should pop right into gear when you switch it.
Not sure about the fuel problems...better wait for the experts on this one

I remember awhile ago that people use to change our their fuel lines. Something like a 1/2" to the pump from the tank and you take that line (old fuel line) and use that for the return line. That way both have been enlarged to help the motor get more fuel and return it back for overflow.
I'm not an expert by all means but the missing could possibly be from an injector sticking. I'd try the old remedy of throwing in some ATF into the fuel tank. I know when our big rigs would stick we'd take the fuel filter off and fill it with ATF, put it back on and she'd be running as smooth as ever.
BTW I do realize you're running PODs which would mean they're fairly new but it's still food for thought.
And quite simply try changing your fuel filter while you're at it.

Or you could you Power Services GREY bottle of Cetane Boost. $5 at Wal-Mart for the small bottle or just buy the big one and get the rebate going on now. Its works awesome and can improve lousy mpg.
It think a loopy injector makes the most sense...
If it was dumping fuel...making it miss at idle the other day...then I stabbed the throttle bringing-up the RPM's and there ya' go...runaway condition due to the extra fuel from the sticky injector.
Plus, although everyone says PODs haze at idle...it seems like it sometimes smokes a lot more than a haze at idle...and other times not as much.
Sometimes I can see clouds coming past me at idle, and other times you don't see anything.
And that chugging it does is much worse at some times than others...again a sticking injector dumping a bit more fuel than there should be...causing an uneven powerstroke on that cyl.
I'm going to have keep watch to see if it does smoke more when it's chugging badly.
I'm trying to get the old injectors to have them checked before installing them to see if it makes a difference.
What should I have done to them, and who does this?
Plus I'll check compression while they're out...just to see what it is.
Then I'll have the POD's checked too while they're out.
Thanks for all the idea's guys...keep 'em coming.

You probably know all this but here goes ........
The Lucas injector is/has a different tip style/design that the other typical injectors we use in these trucks. It is a 'sac' type. The difference is in the way the fuel is supplied....the POD's have a sort of resiviour in the tip, this is were the fuel for the injection cycle comes from. When the injector releases it's fuel charge it then closes off and refills for the next cycle. During the closing stage, some of the fuel invariably remains in the tip...admittedly a very small amount but still some fuel. This residual then "drips or drops" if you will, into the cylinder. Since it is not under the kind of pressure the initial charge was and, since it is a rather coarse droplet it doesn't burn properly. The combustion cycle has already begun and is near completion when this "drip" event takes place and this creates the haze.....
Also contributing to this is the cylinder temperatures...if, for example, at idle you check your pyro you'll see some pretty low EGT's....likely at or near (if not below) 300*F. That is were you'd normally shut down an engine when your stopping, not letting it continue to run. Those factors contribute/create the byproduct of hazing....
If for example you've been workin it hard for some time and then come to a stop for traffic reasons lets say, you'll see your temps drop...but there is not as much haze as you normally seem to get....likely because you've cleaned up the tips from the workout..and, you've got residual heat in the cylinder walls/block that is aiding, however briefly, the slightly better burning of the residual fuel charge.
Since these injectors are really a "wildmans nightmare" for fun and giggles it's kind of a badge we all have to wear if we run these injectors.
These injectors when in original (stock) out of the box condition can flow more fuel per cycle than a large 370 injector used in the later model trucks...but it's the tip design that gets us and not the others....unless you want to drop some heavy cash on a set of EDM'd injectors that are a very good substitute and provide as much or more power and slightly less smoke.
Keep in mind that with some persistant tuning and tweaking you CAN reduce the haze but I doubt you'll ever get rid of it entirely...believe me I have tried...just for fun and from having too much time on my hands...
You are ahead of the game if you use the pump timing adjustment, the AFC spring preload, and the fuel screw to tweak this out as best you can.
Did I get any of that right you guys...??? Did that help at all ????
