My Dad also has a '92. It's a regular cab like mine, but it has a Getrag. It is in far worse material conditon that mine though.
For some reason, the previous owner taped off the ends of the intercooler, removed all the piping, and reinstalled a non-IC crossover pipe and compressor housing.
Why would you do this?
My Dad thinks it because the intercooler was leaking?
I offered to give him all my stock intercooler piping and clamps, along with my stock compressor housing and wheel so we can convert it back to stock.

This makes sense if you think about it. If the intercooler was bad there would be no use in protecting it from dirt. The other thought would be an intercooler line boot busted and someone couldn't find a replacement boot. Checking the injection pump number might give some clues as to what is going on.

Theres ways to tell if its a intercooled motor, little sensors going into the intake plate near the grids and stuff like that, the non i/c motors are so simple its rediculous.

My guess is its a swap. If the A2A went bad, why would you try and keep the inside clean. If a boot went or something I can't believe it would be easier to find the non I/C crossover pipe then to find the boot.
