stereo in standard cab

I know most are more concerned with EGT's, grinding getrag's and black smoke, but rocking out is fun too. I have the Stock arangement of speakers in my standard cab, with the two skinny ones behind the seat and the two in the door. All have been replaced at some point in time with quality units, and the stereo deck is a sony explode CD player with XM.
My question is, what have you done to get a little more out of what little room there is to offer. My door seals are bad and the truck is a little noisy at freeway speed.
anyone have luck mounting speakers behind or under the seat?? or small ones on the dash?? One more in each door??
I figure two more decent sized speakers, and an amp should do me good, but i dont want to invest time in some custom fitting speaker boxes if they arent going to be herd much.

Im up for any opinions

I installed two truck boxes, one behind each seat, they fit tightly in parcel tray, and fit well behind seat.

I have a box I bought from the traveling tool sales guys (cummins) for the
12's behind the seat. With sony 6x9's in boxes behind the seat and pioneer premiers 6x9's in the doors. My amp is under the seat and I have a jvc cd/dvd head unit. It is really loud even over the truck. 7" screens are next .

Can you really hear the 6x9's behind the seat? that sounds like a good plan, i know that a sub would shound great behind the seat, but i dont really know if i wanted to go with subs. would it sound ok without the subs and with just the 6x9's?

thanks for the input, keep'em coming

I manage a car audio shop and your best bet is to make sure your speakers really are of good quality, if not then replace w/factory sized upgraded speakers (aprox $100-$150/pair) and then purchase a 4ch amp to drive them($200-$300) again being sure it is of good quality with adjustable crossovers. The crossovers will keep low end frequencies out of your speakers that would normally damage them. If you so desire a singe or pair of 10" or 12" subs could also be install in a custom or pre-fab sub box behind the back seat. If you do this you will also need an amp to drive them. Hope this helps.

As far as subs go if you like the deep base from a bass guitar, kick drum, or the beat from rap/dance music then a sub is an excelent upgrade. Any speaker including a 6x9 is not designed to handle really deep bass(aprox 30-70hz) where a sub woofer is designed to handle this frequency specifically. A sub woofer set-up can get rather expensive($100-$200/sub, 100-$250 box, $200-$350 amp, plus all the power cables) how ever it adds a lot to the over all sound. A speaker/amp system can still play very loud and sound quite good with out the added cost of a sub however.

When I had my '85 regular cab I put a pair of 8" subs in a homebuilt ported enclosure behind the seat. Made a nice back massager. Had a set of Rockford Fosgate 6 1/2"s in the doors.

I've thought about building a combination console/sub enclosure to replace the stock console, but I haven't bothered. I like listening to the motor too much.

I have four Focal 6x9's in my truck all in the FACTORY locations. 6x9's easily fit in the rear stock location after cutting 4 notches in the factory grills. I am incredibly happy with the sound of my stereo. In fact I wouldn't change a thing.

Right awn guys, thanks for all of the help.
I got a line on some used 10" subs with an amp, but i think i am gunna leave the subs in the garage for now and use the amps and put two new 6x9"s behind the seat in the factory location. I already have decent 6x9"s in the door(which i just found out last night). eventually i may put one of the subs behind the seat in a custom box, but my truck has enought loose bolts already.

Alright that sounds good, I did some digging for you last night and here is the price I paid for all of my stuff:
CD/DVD Deck: $239.99
6x9's: $102 + $130 for all 4
Subs/amp/wiring-$425 Box $60

I didn't buy it all at once but slowly over 2 years, upgrading and replacing along the way.
