Squelling in rear of truck
Squelling in rear of truck
I have been having break issues, as one side was locking up. I also have a high pitched squell that seems to be coming from the rear of the truck. Its not too loud, but noticable.
I figured all was related, so I pulled the hubs and found a spring broke on the opposite side from the side that was locking up. My guess was all the breaking was going to the side without the broke spring resulting in the locking condition. I replaced the spring, and all is well with the breaks, but the squell is still there. All bearing looked good, as I replaced them about 6 months ago.
My question is this, I recall my dad having to grease the speed - o - meter cable on an old Astro Van we had one time on vacation doing the same noise. Is that required on our trucks? What could that squell be? I just knew when I found the broke spring that would cure it all.
Any ideas?
Thanks!

How about putting the rear up on jack stands & spinning the rear , get under with creeper to see if you can narrow down , get a cheep stethoscope , take the end off & put rod on the end , touch to areas that you suspect , the loudest spot wins .
A broken or loose spring in the rear brakes can really make a screeching racket.
A bent brake-shoe can give you fits, trying to diagnose a noise, as it is not very obvious when looking at them.
A front dust-shield tipping a rotor will wake the dead.
Going forward, bad U-joints are usually quite, but will sort of "squeeky squeeky squeeky" when backing up.
Is anything touching the drive-shaft ??
Is it a constant steady screech, or an intermittent "chirping" sort of screeching??

Maybe more of a whine and a screech, as it is steady - IE - consistent in sound. Almost like when a bearing starts getting dry, but a little higher pitched. What is weird is sometimes it will do it and others it won't.
Before we found the broke spring, I could hit the brakes real hard and it would stop. Now, a hard brake hit will quieten it, but not make it totally go away like before...
Appreciate everyone's advice! Keep it coming.
