Paint Job Price - Want to Run Past Everyone

When I bought my truck a couple of years ago, the top of the cab has some surface rust. Nothing major. It seems over the last 2 or 3 months, the rust has really come on. Its still on the surface, and not pitting the metal, but it and the drip rail above the windshield are in need of some TLC. The drip shield sealer is starting th flake & roll up, so I know it needs addressed ASAP.

I talked with a body man my dad works with who paints at the highway dept. here locally and on the side. I have seen his work, and he does a really good job. He looked at my truck, and quoted me 2K to do the following:

- strip the truck to the metal & re-primer - he said the dodges were bad about the primer turning loose from the metal and that is what my truck is doing in some areas. He said to put a slick paint job on it, it would be easier to strip the whole truck instead of just the problem spots.

- replace all of body molding

- Fix the seams in the bed where there are cracks

- fix the tail gate latches that are tearing out of the tailgate

- paint the inside of the bed

- replace all of the seals around the doors & roll-up windows.

- remove the front windshield to make sure there is no rust on the sealing lip for the windshield, as it has started leaking recently.

This would be the 1st vehicle I have ever sought to re-paint. I usually don't keep anything long enough for it to matter. But I plan on keeping this truck from now-on, so I want a good slick paint job.

I guess it all boils down to me liking his work, but I wanted to see if anyone had any experience with getting these trucks re-painted and what to look for.

Thanks for any advice!

That sounds like a really good deal, to strip it down, plus replace all seals and moulding.

X2 on the good deal.
If you've seen his work and trust him I'd jump on that.

That sounds like an excellent deal considering the amount of work and materials involved. What kind of paint will he be applying, acrylic enamel, base clear?
I'm going to paint mine next spring, are the body side moldings available for these yet? Mine is a '91 LE.

If he does good quality work, 2K is a steal for the amount of work he said he would do... I would jump on it.

You might want to pull the headliner and inspect the roof from the inside,
They like to rust up there.

How long is it going to take him to do it? I have heard of people doing this and taking months to GIT-R-DONE. The paint and supplies for painting will cost approx. $ 6-800. Thats about what it cost me to do mine. Completly stripped the truck to metal to get rid of the primer, is a good idea.

Suggestion, get all this in writing before he starts and get an ending date.

He said he could have it back to me in 2 weeks. Like I said above, he is a friend of my dads, so I would expect him to take care of me.

I appreciate everyone's feedback. I was just unsure if that was a decent price or not.

He is giving you a great deal. He could make more money putting in the same amount of time at McDonalds.

I am not sure on the type of paint. That is an excellent question to ask. He did call back and say that the molding for my truck was not available through his channels, and asked if I would mind using the current stuff if he freshened it up. The only problem with the current molding is the paint is peeling off the molding around the fender wells, the rest looks mint when washed.

Good idea on getting everything in writing with a ETA. I have started a list now of the details. Thanks Everyone! I will post some before & after shots once I get them. He picks it up next weekend.

I am not saying he cant do it in that short of time, but he would have to bust his behind to get all you say he is going to do, done. That is A LOT OF WORK to do. Hope it works out for you.
